It only updates upon clicking on "My updates" in the upper right corner. If you view the posts manually in the actual thread, then the update counter does not decrease.
It's not a game breaker but it is pretty annoying, can we talk about having this fixed?

Sir ArmaMalum1 votesI've been able to reproduce this anytime I leave the Updates page without jumping to an update. Although I differ from OP in the fact that mine goes down to 0 once I manually view the comment in question.
