Do we need an EUW boards?

SKOBODO··8 votes·1,779 views

So, Riot has finally created a board that can be accessible by both NA and EUW players, and presumably EUNE and perhaps others as well, though I have yet to see any. There was little reason to split the GD and other boards between NA and EUW (and EUNE) to begin with. Should Riot bother making Boards for EUW, now that EUW players can post here anyway? Why not make this one the one and only boards, plus some boards for specific languages and some subforum for servers, where people can complain about server issues and what not.

What say you? Is there a need to split the forum activity in NA, EUW, EUNE, Oceania, etc, or should there just be one major board for the English speaking LoL-players?

My personal opinion is that all the regions that feasibly speak English should be able to combine on this platform. We would obviously need separate boards for region-specific issues like server problems, but for multi-language support there are a few options; these two are the most interesting to me:

  • Completely separate Boards platforms distinguished by language, switchable by an interface at the top. Content would not be translated or moved between platforms; they would each be their own ecosystem but linked by the language changer at the top.
  • The current English Boards as the core with a few specialized boards for different languages.

This ends up depending on the community sizes. If the Portugese-speaking population is large enough to inhabit their own entire platform, then awesome! If not, it might have to be a specific board within the English platform.

I'm in agreement here. Having been to Europe multiple times, there is a lot of different culture to experience and most of it accounts for English-speaking. It's great to see other regions unite alongside NA to create content in the primary Boards.

This idea appeals to me the most and would almost require the entire sidebar to have more depth (which is necessary, in my opinion).

That being said, it wouldn't necessarily be fair to remove all of the Boards features for a region just because their language has a smaller community behind it. Just giving them a GD because there may only be, say, 10,000 people associated with a language, is a stopgap solution at best.

It's less about fairness and more about feasibility. If a community has a thousand people or less, giving them 20 different rooms to speak in would dilute their community to the point where conversation becomes difficult. In addition, I could imagine there being technical or financial limitations.

Basically, there is a point at which a community becomes too large or too small for a given space. In my experience, a couple hundred or so users is a great benchmark for a single board. The ideal thread density is, at least in my experience, between about 24 and 720 new threads a day. As far as replies are concerned, between about 144 and 4,320 replies a day seems manageable. This works out to the following hourly activity:

1 thread per hour at minimum - 1 thread every 2 minutes at maximum 6 replies per hour at minimum - 1 reply every 20 seconds at maximum 7 actions per hour at minimum - 1 action every 17 seconds at maximum

Assuming that, on average, each user posts two times a day, a community size of between 82 and 2,520 players is required per board for it to feel alive. If you have 20 boards, that's 1,640 - 50,400 concurrent users.

Based on the above, you need decent-sized communities for the concept of full boards per language to work. The question is whether those communities exist in those numbers.

Fair point. Only Riot has those numbers, but I think it would still be ideal to have at least multiple categories rather than just a single board. Diluting the experience too much can heavily influence that lean between fairness and feasibility. And given that we just moved away from GD, it doesn't seem necessary to revisit that specific idea for individual communities.

I don't honestly see an issue with keeping them together either, except for the instances that you mentioned (language specific boards, boards for specific server issues, etc.) I, for one, welcome our English overlords. Welcome, brother.

Since Reds most likely wouldn't look at the EUW boards (let alone EUNE) I just want them to stay merged.

As an EUNE player...

I like it here.

Here I'm not forgotten, only ignored.

It's an improvement.

You are not ignored today, friend!
