I have pretty much stopped saying "GG" at the end of games, and this is my reason why.
My reason for me actively not typing in "GG" at the end of every game now is because most of my games aren't really that good anymore. They aren't fun, and it's not because League isn't fun. League is fun, but the community makes the game extremely unfun to play now. If I win? Trash talking at the end. If I lose? Trash talking at the end. If a good play happens? Someone on the opposing team calls out something like "lucky scrub" or something related to that sentiment. Someone makes a bad play? No constructive criticism, only destructive criticism. Someone doesn't play the way another player wants them to play? Immediately insults the player.
I honestly believe that if I say "GG" at the end, the whole game needs to **EARN ** that "GG". If a game is going well? Great! But, at the end, if it resorts to stuff that I see on a daily basis now?
"gg ez" "yawn too ez" "thanks for the freelo"
These comments are essentially why I stopped saying "GG" at the end every single game, because saying it at the end of every game like it's a requirement is like me saying "Have a good day" to someone, and then they flatly and unconsciously say, "Yeah, you too." There's really no spirit in it, and it's essentially wired mechanically in the brains of others. There's no genuine feeling to it, and it honestly feels like I would have to say it or be considered a pariah if I don't.
I personally mute every single person in the game for the majority of it. I then unmute everyone in the last few minutes of the game, hoping that I will see some form of sportsmanship. Nope. Post game also becomes an insult fest. I have had many of my friends leave League (A lot of my friends are around the Bronze to Low Plat level, and a few are in Diamond, none that I know of in Master or Challenger) not because the game has gotten more difficult or unenjoyable for the game itself, but the most common thing I hear other than "I don't have time to play" (which is honestly the second most common thing) is "The community is the main reason for why I left League". A lot of my friends moved over to Overwatch, a good portion of them went back to WoW, some are playing other MOBAs, and others are playing completely different genres.
So far, out of the number of games I have played recently for this year, I can only account for ONE game where I genuinely said "GG" at the end of the game, because not only did I have fun, but to me, it felt like everyone in the game actually had a sportsmanlike attitude at the end of the game. And unfortunately, that one game I had was with two other friends I know outside of the game, and me getting paired up against one of the people on my friend's list through chance (though, it wasn't really chance because the Twisted Treeline community is so tiny).
I personally think that the community has gotten to the point where saying "GG" is meaningless. I feel like it's empty sportsmanship and an empty gesture now to say that, mainly because I have consistently seen the toxic ingame community of League, even in fun gametypes like ARAM (For example, just today, I have had 3 games where I lost all of them, and here are the main quotes I saw in each and every single one of the games I have had today. Yesterday, about the same. The day before? Same. Here are a few things that I see during post-game chat. These are the more tame ones too.)
"gg ez" "thanks for the free win" "2 ez" "such scrubs"
I have seen many people suggest things which are genuinely great, such as actually punishing those who are jerks towards others more severely now. But, those suggestions are a dime a dozen in this forum, not because there are many bad ideas, but because this subforum in particular seems to voice their dissent of the community due to it being toxic. I personally like that idea that people who are jerks ingame (e.g. by trolling, telling someone that they suck, not working well with the team, etc.) being punished more severely than they do now. Personally, I like games where people tend to work together, or games where the community is closely-knit and will help out others if they need it. League is not one of those communities, almost the complete polar opposite. Honestly, I suggested something earlier this year, but like the other suggestions, pushed down past the 5th page where no one really goes to look because others are saying the same thing: that a lot of players in League are toxic.
I feel like this is a rant, and honestly, over the past year, it has built up into one because there seems to be very little being done (if any at all) to adjust the community's attitude towards each other. This post would honestly never have existed in the first place if a good portion of the community and Riot actively worked together to make this community a more inclusive place (inb4 jerks come in and say grow a pair or grow some thicker skin or something like that; they aren't helping their case, and they're just reinforcing my point that the community has gotten immensely more toxic).
tl;dr The community's attitude has gotten worse since I joined. League is a fun game, but the community makes the game extremely unfun to play now, and I find League to be a much funner game when I mute every single person in the game. If people have to mute every single person in the game just to make it tolerable, then that is something that needs to be addressed by Riot as soon as possible.
