That the players complaining about trolls in these forums were the people actually trolling games?

Rather than them "being trolls", I suspect it is more that their attitudes and behaviors cause toxicity without them realizing it. The same way the guy who is always nervous and looking all around to be sure he is safe is the one most likely to get mugged.

I disagree. Trolling is a malicious act with intent to bother others. Rather than being trolls, I think the complainers would benefit from merely thinking other people aren't trolls. That way, people wouldn't think the complainers are also trolls because the complainers are no longer erroneously harassing others.
