It takes longer, but, now, if I respond in chat to another player....
I write the statement that i am responding to and put it in quotes first. That way I keep a record and have a reference to that portion of the conversation.

This looks suspiciously like an attempt to record toxic statements you're responding to so you can refer to them in your eventual ban appeal. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Ok
Seems like a bad idea, the Tribunal is automated and probably doesn't know the difference between your toxic statements and quoted toxic statements.
The context of the things people say doesn't really matter when it comes to punishing them.
If someone sets fire to a house, and in response, you set fire to a house, the reason for your actions don't really matter, you still set fire to a house.
Same concept applies. If someone starts insulting you, and in response, you start hurling your own insults, the reason for your insults don't really matter, you still insulted someone. And that's against Riot's rules.
This is an awfully big waste of time for something Riot isn't going to care about.
This isn't kindergarten, they shouldn't have to tell you that it doesn't matter who started it.
