Riot Needs to Consider IP banning players

Honestly , I'm Becoming a Firm Believer that Riot needs to start Utilizing IP bans. Because right now its way to easy to make a throw away account or buy one and then flat out Spam troll with them.

After this preseason its becoming horrible and honestly each game is basically a decent team followed by a game with a troll or two just Trolling on a lvl 30-35 account like some un jerk.

Riot you need to start doing something to counter this because its only getting worse.

IP bans have not been a thing that actually works for around 20 years now. It takes about 30 seconds to change your external IP.

IP bans don't work.

  1. Too easy to reset a router for a new IP address
  2. VPNs are a super easy way to dodge an IP ban
  3. Collateral damage. They did an IP ban way back in S1 or so and accidentally knocked out an entire college dorm.

The sentiment here is on the mark, but the execution is not. As others have already pointed out, there are many pitfalls to IP bans as well as easy ways to get around them. A better solution would be to require phone numbers and two factor authentication. That is, you need to provide an active mobile number, and each time you log in, you need to provide a key that is sent to the mobile number. It adds a few seconds to the login process, but it drastically improves security since your password cannot be bruteforced, but it also creates a realistic limit on account creation AND makes it harder to sell accounts.

Do you know how IPs work?

Do you want to ban entire dormitories and internet cafes because of one person? Because Rito does not want to do that.
