HOW TO: Unbind your enter key to prevent inadvertent toxicity

These steps are no longer necessary - the ability to disable ally chat is now a part of the client.

An explanation for how you can disable your own ability to chat to completely remove the possibility of yelling at your Wood 5 team and winding up item 3133'ed after a bad game.

If you can't hit enter, you can't send chat.The game client lets you rebind most of your keys, but critically, enter isn't one of them. This means we have to use something else if we want to change what enter does.

Instructions

Windows

NOTE: CURRENTLY NOT WORKING 100% (10/2018). You must currently relaunch autohotkey after the game has loaded to have it capture the enter key properly. Looking at alternative options now.

  1. Install AutoHotKey
  2. Copy the text in the box below:

#ifwinactive League of Legends (TM) Client

*Enter::return

*NumpadEnter::return

  1. Open notepad, hit paste
  2. Save the file somewhere you can easily access, and name it unbindEnterLoL.ahk
  3. Load the file with AutoHotKey.

Note: if you find that this isn't working correctly, you may need to run AutoHotKey as administrator

Mac

  1. Install HammerSpoon
  2. When it starts for the first time, you'll be prompted to grant it accessibility access. Ensure you do this, or it won't work.
  3. Copy the text in the box below:

enterUnbind = hs.hotkey.new({}, 'return', function () end ) hs.window.filter.new('League of Legends (TM) Client') :subscribe(hs.window.filter.windowFocused, function() enterUnbind:enable() end) :subscribe(hs.window.filter.windowUnfocused, function() enterUnbind:disable() end)

  1. In Hammerspoon's menu, select "open config"
  2. Paste the text you just copied into the text editor that appears
  3. Save the file.
  4. In Hammerspoon, click on "Reload config"

Note: if this is not working, you need to run the game in windowed, or fullscreen borderless mode. If the game is set to fullscreen, the keybind will not activate properly. As an alternative, you can use this text, which will disable enter as long as Hammerspoon is running. You will need to close it outright after exiting the game or enter still won't work!

enterUnbind = hs.hotkey.new({}, 'return', function() end):enable()

Now, if the League client is active, Enter does nothing, and you will be unable to send outgoing messages. This will have no impact on the rest of your computer.

Once you feel that you've cooled off, just turn off AutoHotKey/Hammerspoon, and Enter will work as normal.

Oh yeah, I should note that this program doesn't interact with the League client in any way, and so is not a danger to your account. It is not a modification of the game or its files, it doesn't read the game's memory, it doesn't give you any advantage in game.

Unfortunately, quite a few people would just rush to turn it off mid match when they feel like they really need to tear into a player. But still something to give them a little extra time to think about what they're about to do.

Makes no sense why riot wouldn't make removing the chat functionality as a possibility anyway

I am currently working on a Chat restriction script, which shall reset once you get out of the game. If you can wait some time I will make it available. Compared to this method, it will also allow Input similar to the chat restriction implemented by Riot. You can define how many initial chats you wanna have available, how long the chat restriction will last and how many additional chat prompts you get after the chat restriction timer elapsed. I hate beeing completly cut off from the communication but often find myself arguing too hard - Thus I personally prefer to be permantly chat restricted. However Riot has no intention to implement that.

Here you go. I made it as easy as possible to load. In the loading screen you just have to tab out and use the left mouse button once - A tooltip that the script successfully loaded will appear at your mouse cursor.

Ofc setting the available chat messages (and tooltip time) to 0 will have the same effect as the script above.

This is now no longer necessary. As of a patch or two ago, there is an in-client ability to disable ally chat that works just like the checkbox to disable all chat.

Could a kind moderator lock this thread? Thanks!
