And is smurfing punishable? I understand that riot would rather not leak the criteria for receiving a ban. But recently I decided to check back on someone I sus'd for it and he's maintained a solid 80% winrate from bronze to plat, all out of nowhere. (I was op.gg'ing and he was on my favourites so i got curious.)
Just wondering what counts as boosting and if smurfing is punishable.
GankedByWindows2 votesSmurfing is not reportable, nor are boosting and smurfing the same thing. Riot doesn't really like smurfs, but as of now they tolerate them.
Boosting (as far as Riot is concerned and what is bannable) is someone getting on your account who is better than you and ranking up. It also also used informally to mean duoing with someone who is better than you (often on a smurf account) and playing to rank up. The first is bannable, and the second is not.
Ramen2261 votesI understand they're no the same thing. But it was really 2 different questions because this wasn't a smurf account. It was someone who was bronze 4 and then they randomly had a 80% winrate through gold and into plat. And this guy doesn't duo too often. Every single one of his games he does really well and carries every game he wins.
So this guy either bought the account (which is banable) or someone else is playing on the account (also banable)
I can pm you the name of the account so you can see it. This isn't to shame him or anything but I just want a little more insight on why he didn't get punished.

Assuming it is a case of boosting, though, don't expect the player to get banned immediately after you encounter them in a game and report them. Since Riot really doesn't want to screw up and falsely ban somebody for account sharing or boosting, it takes time for their systems to be certain that boosting is happening.
Historically, they've done a few larger ban waves for boosting, particularly towards the end of the season. That's not to say they won't ban people for this outside of the large ban waves, though.
Ramen2261 votesThis was a little over two months ago. What makes it more suspicious is that the account went from a support/adc main to a top only account that looks like they secondary mid. And for me that takes the cake over everything else.
Zielmann2 votesAgain, it takes time. We don't have access to all the info Riot does. It's possible that there's something that makes it look potentially legit. Or maybe the account is flagged and they're planning another wave of boosting bans soon, so they're just going to catch it in there.
It will catch up to them eventually if they are boosting.

Boosting is when someone else plays ranked matches on your account to get you a higher Ranking.
