Why am I being penalized for this?

Twice in the last few days, I was forced to leave games right as they began. Because my mother is very ill I sometimes need to help her when she calls. A few minutes ago, this happened again. The game got to the loading screen and I was called away. So instead of putting my teammates into a position where they would lose LP, I just opted to disconnect at the start so they could remake. My question is, why does this have a penalty? When someone leaves a game before the game even begins, no one is hurt by it. It's also not done in malice. It's not a rage quit or a leave that would cause the team to lose anything besides time.

So, why am I penalized for this? What would the better solution have been? I seriously have no idea why I'm getting punished for opting into a situation where no one (except for me apparently) loses anything.

It wastes everybody's time, for starters. Getting through the process of queueing, banning, picking, loading (incredibly slowly, since somebody disconnected), and then waiting until the remake time is no joke. Everybody's got to go through that again when you ditch a game. Plus, if there were no penalty, players would bail upon learning that they were against a skilled player, for example.

Better solution? If you're responsible for another person's well-being and are actively on call, don't play League. Sorry, but that's life. Plenty of other games to play that can actually be paused.

You are punished because you wasted the time of 9 other people and ruined their game. In fact it's your responsibility to make sure that you can play the match until it's end. Nobody else is responsible for that. If you are not sure wether or not you can fullfill this responsibilty, DON'T EVEN QUEUE UP.

or maybe before you queue go to your mum and ensure she has everythinf and tell her "okay ill be busy for like half an hour soon. You got everything you need?"

And I am i being penalized by you? A remake cost about 15-20 minutes (maybe more depends on queue time) from the time I entered the lobby to the time I am about to vote for remake. On top of that, I would also hope there is no troll that decides to yolo and votes "no" to remake.

While you may have a legitimate reason for leaving, Rito system will allowed you the occasional "emergency" with very light punishment (5 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes dodge timer, etc. and the obviously LP loss that would incurred whether you afk 5 minutes in or leave early for remake).

Let's not selfishly blame your situation for a second and answer this; If my situation only allowed for a 40-50 minutes game per day, why am I being punished by you for pissing away 15-20 minutes of my time effectively blocking me from being able to start another game that day? Your problem now becomes my problem when you could/should be a courteous to 9 other people's time and just refrain from queue-ing altogether if you know you can and will have FREQUENT emergency.

Your situation is understandable and I feel for you, but you are punishing me (i.e. 9 other players) every time you do this knowing this is not an occasional problem, but a frequent one.

Even if you leave before it starts the team you were on is now down a player. Which means they may most likely lose due to you leaving them. It is penalized for this reason.

I suggest that you make a schedule to see when you are able to be on or not. So this way you aren't abandoning a team, potentially ruining their experience.

Leaving at champion select still counts as leaving. As that is technically the beginning of a game.

If you know having to leave is a possibility often enough that you're going to face more serious punishments for it, you shouldn't play in the first place. Play another game such as civilization where you can save and run.

I know this probably isn't what you want to hear, but perhaps it is best that, while your mother is ill, you refrain from playing ranked (or just league in general). I say this not out of malice, but I believe it would be less of a hassle for you to take a break from League to assist your mother.

It may be irrelevant in some cases. But the game still has zero tolerance for leaving a game no matter the cause. Everyone here agrees, sure they probably wouldnt be mad since you're aiding a sick mum. But maybe stay away from the game until she becomes independent again. May be your only option
