How to Avoid Getting Punished

For most people, just communicating with teammates the way you would acquaintances sitting in the same room with you is all you need to not get punished, but if you actually need a breakdown of what to do, here it is.

*Note: I don't include intentional feeding, leaving, or any other active attempts to ruin the game in this analysis. This analysis is based on the assumption that you don't understand what's getting you in trouble. In those circumstances, you know exactly what the issue is.

In a neutral game (no one is already tilted, argumentative, trolling, or anything of the sort):

  1. Avoid hate speech. This really should be obvious, and is completely unambiguous.
  2. Avoid pointless criticism. Examples of pointless criticisms include: Stop feeding, should have warded, jungler never ganks, etc. This sort of criticism adds no value to the game and annoys the player being criticized.
  3. If you wish to lead, communicate in concise, tone neutral directives. Examples: Let's baron, Ward red, No flash mid, gank please.
  4. As an addendum to #3, if people don't follow you, LET IT GO. Clearly you haven't established yourself as "the leader" of your team. No amount of chatting at them will fix this.

In a game that has gone negative:

  1. NEVER ARGUE WITH SOMEONE IN GAME OVER ANYTHING. DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU'RE RIGHT OR WRONG.
  2. Make 1 (one, singular) attempt to diffuse the situation. Example: Oops, my bad, should have tried to gank sooner.
  3. If #2 fails, say you've muted them, but don't actually do it. Often they'll stop if no one is listening. They might have something positive to say later on.
  4. If #3 fails, actually mute them.
  5. If you had to do more than #2, report after the game. Don't mention you're reporting. Don't ask for reports. Just do it.

If you follow these simple instructions, I guarantee you won't get penalized.

Woah there, you're making far too much sense here.

Secret tip: if you want to yell at someone, yell at your screen. Do not type anything. It will still help vent anger a bit though.

Dont make any contact with anybody and you wont get banned, if you say anything chances are you'll get reported for breathing incorrectly

Saw your post in the other thread and wished I could upvote it twice. Now I can. w00t!

Seriously though, I think this is the best post of that kind that I've seen on the forums. Covers pretty much all of the unwritten and written rules. Especially like #3 in a negative game. I like to imagine I invented that... I probably didn't, but I still like to imagine it.

Very nice post! I don't tell people I muted them, but otherwise spot on for what I do.

Dont call people names. It is really that simple. And don't speak negative about a player who is trying.

  1. Don't say racial slurs or words like cancer, aids, etc.

Congratz you'll never get punished even if you int. Source: extremely toxic friends who follow this rule, and personal experience reporting people who say "n*gger" but do nothing else toxic.

Actually, I kinda disagree with point 5, the "don't mention it" part.

Tantram repeatedly said that a tiny fraction of players ever get any kind of punishment. Yet, there is largely more than a "tiny fraction" of negative people in the game. Why? Because there is some leniency in the system, you're not getting punished for one bad game, you have to demonstrate a trend of bad behaviors.

So what will happen to all those players that just have "one bad game" once in a while, if I silently report them? Nothing. They'll never get punished (and I'm not arguing they should), and they'll never change their behavior. Next time they'll have a bad day, they'll be just as toxic.

Whereas if you say you reported them, that's a clear sign that they did something not tolerated by the rest of the community. Maybe they'll change their behavior BEFORE getting any kind of punishment. I'm not too optimistic, but the alternative (just silently reporting them), we can be sure it won't do anything at all. So when you report someone, speak up and say it. And explain why. Don't do a 2 pages speech, but make it clear it's not just because "they feed" or "they didn't gank enough" or some silly pretext like that. Give them some clues to correct their behavior.

More generally, if someone does something bad in game, makes mean comments towards some minority, sexist/homophobic/racist jokes, etc. SPEAK UP! Especially if it's not targeted at you! It's important. The community at large needs to show that it won't tolerate this kind of behavior, needs to show its support to the targeted people. Don't just silently report them.

P.S.: the rest (i.e. the vast majority of the post), I 100% agree with. I just had to speak up about that small point.

My preferred solution to whenever I mess up or someone criticizes me: "I am unskilled"

People have a hard time being mad at that, and it's probably true. Even if you don't think it's true, you can think to yourself that it's obviously sarcasm and feel smug, but either way the situation is diffused.

How to not get banned 101:

Dont say any swear words ??? Profit

Int all you want, say your team is bad without any bad words, and you wont get punished.
