Please Remember to Lead by Example on PB

Hey there, Player Behavior.

I just wanted to take a moment to remind everyone engaging in discussion here on Player Behavior that we all -- banned or unbanned, in favor of the system or not in favor of the system -- are deserving of civility and respect. This means a few things:

  • If someone asks in good faith why they were banned, tell them simply and without judgment.
  • If someone asks for help, give them good suggestions without impugning them as a person.
  • If someone offers help or advice and it is not appreciated, simply ignore it or respond respectfully.
  • If someone disagrees with you on whether or not a punishment (or the system) is justified, don't attack each other as people.
  • If a conversation gets heated, it feels someone isn't willing to discuss things civilly, or you're frustrated that someone isn't listening to you, simply bow out -- you don't need to get the last word.
  • If you wish simply to complain about the system, let us know in your opening post so we don't try to offer advice.
  • If you are not happy with your punishment or think the system is flawed, do not attack those who are telling you how it works, or why it works that way -- the system isn't their fault.
  • If you think someone's actions are horrible, remember that it is their actions you should take umbrage with, not their personhood. Their behavior may have been toxic, but address their behavior and not the individual.

#Remember the purpose of this board is to inform, advise, and discuss player behavior and the punishment system. It is not to prove yourself right, change the opinions of people who do not want their opinion changed, laugh at/belittle players who have been punished, or laugh at/belittle players who support the existing system.

I want to copypaste a post I made yesterday along these lines:

  • But context!
  • But they started it!
  • But I was "defending myself"!

and so on, when literally every bit of this is covered under the dual principles of the summoner's code and the saying "don't be a dick".

Part of the reason is that the ingame systems for toxicity are wholly unsatisfying and opaque, and so people come here (including myself in this) to see the system actually working and revel a bit in the Demacian JUSTICE! of seeing someone who acted like that troll last game getting their comeuppance.

And the final reason is the frequency with which people lie on these boards. Even the most socially ignorant person in the world knows you don't call people slurs in mixed company, and so there's this pre-existing presumption of bad faith simply because bad faith (and wanting to argue, rather than learn) is a lot more common here than the opposite.

I'd say the breakdown in punishment posts is about 98% "I got punished, I know why, I just want to vent/gloat/argue about it", 1.9% "I got punished, I have no idea why", 0.1% "I got punished, and it was actually unjust"

Not gonna lie, I would expect and want people who come in for the 9001'st time to tell us how "kys" doesn't mean "kill yourself" and anyways it doesn't why are y'all so snowflakey and sensitive they're just words you can mute me you sjws... to be received poorly.

If you're asking in good faith, that's something else entirely, but there's a shocking lack of good-faith posts to reply to. This board could do with an FAQ and threads to be closed when common things pop up. If the replies of "this is what the SC says, here's how you broke it, here's how the punishment system works" aren't enough to convince someone, further discussion is fruitless.

You can still have a poor reception that is respectful and free of insults, taunts, and baiting: "It seems like you know what you did wrong and are looking for people to agree with you that this punishment is undeserved. As I believe this is a proper punishment and have explained why, I will be departing this conversation. Best of luck."

People are allowed to vent their frustrations though, so long as their posts don't violate the rules. They are allowed to comment on a system they think is ridiculous. We can simply let those threads die natural causes without stirring the pot.

In short, just because they're trying to bait us or looking for agreement and only agreement doesn't mean we should show disrespectful or belittle them.

Im gonna be totally honest, do have a habit of belittling others in PB, BUUUUUUUT only when I feel the need to. I.E they bash the system calling it broken/trash or insist they haven't trolled or have been toxic, but when I point it out or show proof and they rage and act like man children and they just look like fools.

And that's sort of exactly the sort of thing we should aspire to be better then -- there isn't a need to belittle someone else here. If they choose to be angry, or frustrated, or to complain rather than listen, it simply makes our community worse if we taunt them or belittle them for it when we can simply disengage and go help someone else.

I've created an AutoHotKey script to disable my enter key which I activate during and after particularly frustrating games. Helps me keep my cool, not flame, and not tilt.

AFAIK, this is completely fine and not bannable, as it registers 1 keypress to 0 (Riot is fine with anything less than or equal to 1:1 scripts (1 keypress = 1 action)).

I did and made sure I wrote a note AND submitted a ticket. That player has been playing and is still playing at this very moment. My tilt is rising after playing this game for so long.

I dont want to and that's not a good way to get through life. These players have been a frqeutnr problem and I've been playing this game for 8 and a half years. I'm very tired of these people. Riot has been doing better at punishing these players but I just question the 'zero tolerance' policy while obviously promoting self harm isnt 'zero tolerance'if they go unpunished.

and what kind of outlook is it when you're so desperate to see 1 specific player punished that rubbed you the wrong way weeks/months/years ago instead of just getting over it like a grown up?

Because there is zero tolerance for 'self harm threats' People like you are part of the issue in social progress and events with trying to push mass silence on issues. I'm allowed to vocalize when someone is an ass, ok allowed to vocalize when there is a rule system that isnt being utilized, if someone says something that is offensive/disruptive/or even annoying I'm allowed to vocalize. There is no getting over it when its a CONSTANT issue. I want players like this banned. The end.

you're trying to twist my words to fit your narrative, I'm not saying there shouldn't be zero tolerance, it absolutely should be zero tolerance.

my point is that your original post wasn't a general statement, it was directed towards one specific player.

I also want toxic players banned, you clearly want this ONE guy banned and are extrapolating that, since he was not banned, the system is broken and that's simply not the case.

I used A player as an example. He isnt rhe only one I follow to see if they are still playing. I keep them favorited on my op.gg and most still play and they are the most atrocious of players.

That player as an example clearly wrote ' I hope you run around with scissors and kill yourself' after saying 'why do I play with all the players with extra chromos'(omes)

And I dont remember everything else that person said.

Again that one player is an example.

i agree with you big time mate. he said get over it like a grown up but the thing is the only people who need to be more grown up like are the people throwing such insults around and bullying others left and right. its actually pretty scary to see how some people think that way these days. they attack the person who is clearly in the right and tell them what they need to do or not do but make no mention on what the instigators should have done or not done to begin with. just fyi this is how i would have responded to what you were saying. you are 100% correct in no way are you at fault for wanting to see this player banned for making such cruel remarks just for the hell of it, because the player in question was the only instigator in the situation (if the player was the only instigator, but from my 4 years of exp in this game people who say shit like that are always the instigators.) and also by him starting crap with random people for no reason whatsoever clearly shows that he does not know how to properly socialize with human beings on a day to day basis and therefore should not be playing a TEAM GAME THAT PRIMARILY RELIES ON SOCIALIZING WITH THE TEAM IN A POSITIVE AND COOPERATIVE WAY TO WIN THE GAME.

i mean can you imagine sitting in a room with four other people paired up and you are just constantly calling each other noobs and saying go kill yourself or your so garbage or blabla. chances are you can't instead if you were all close friends you would be telling each other where to go and talking about what you should do next to win. so why is it so fucking hard to do the same damn thing if you are all in separate rooms in separate states. it does get very fucking old.

Having witnessed a permabanned player IRL for their behavior, it is definitely ironic when they say people need to grow a thick skin. When they themselves are so volatile in the first place, a papercut of a narcissistic wound would send them into a rage. So don't feel too bad if a toxic player blows up on you just explaining how homophobic and racist slurs are not allowable in league chat.

Although methinks the current wave is quite justified in being upset from the fringe cases of sophomoric griefer-mobkdaer reports on the currently and recently punished.

While this can be true in some circumstances, this is another example of a mentality that tends to get into "us vs. them" and "toxic players are bad people." This is the sort of statement that I think harms our ability to connect with some players whose behavior is in need of reform.

truth be told the majority of the people who do stuff like that most likely do it for the sole purpose that they can get away with it. every time i see someone that insults someone else constantly in a match the first thing that comes to mind is there is no way in hell they talk like that to random strangers they meet face to face, and if they do i feel really sorry for them because they are going to have a very rough life. so really i don't think there is any behavior to reform because people seem to do it just to do it. and i have to admit it has pissed me off quite a few times because i always go into a match with the intentions of getting along with everyone and doing my best to help and cooperate with everyone. i think that may be a huge reason why heated arguments can take place in a match or at least it has been for me. because you have two entirely different people going into the match with two entirely different mindsets. one going in expecting to get along with everyone and doing their best at keeping the moral good and the cooperation strong and then you have those that go in with the i don't give a fuck attitude and im going to go off on the first person who dies or the first person that takes a kill from me.

The idea that "the sole purpose that they can get away with it" which keeps popping up is largely inaccurate. That is completely not the reason people flame; that's the reason people troll or int without any instigation.

People flame for individual reasons. It's only a problem if they do it on a consistent basis. If you're using just one game to judge a person in their entirety, then you need to broaden your perspectives. No one starts the match with an "IDGAF" attitude, unless they're inebriated or whatever. Everyone wants to win, everyone wants to have fun, what causes flaming is conflicts between the ways players have fun or want to win

i dont think its fair that when i show i plan to pick my champion and another teammate bannes them because they dont like that champion that i should be punished becasue i dont want to play with them for griefing. if they dont want to be sportsman i shouldnt be forced to play with them.
