Why are higher elo players matched with unranked players?

I just played a game on my main account (which has been forum banned for five years, did a few things I'm not proud of) where I had a Rengar top. I thought nothing of it, I've seen people play it to great effect before. He died 4 times to Jayce in the first five minutes of the game. He would run down lane, try to 1v1, die, and repeat. Basically looked like soft int. We asked him to stop and just play under tower but he refused and continued trying to 1v1 the Jayce.

Turned out he wasn't trying to int, he was just new to the game and started playing it a few weeks ago. He was level 30, this was his first ranked game ever. I am currently Gold elo. Eventually, he started taking my jungle camps, then went afk. We lost very quickly. I'm not even really that mad about this, but I'm only a few losses away from being Gold 4 with 0 LP, and eventually getting demoted back to Silver, so I'm quite desperate. I just wanted to know, how can a Gold player get matched with an unranked player? Everyone else in my game was at least Silver 2.

Thanks in advance.

I think so many players are leaving this game that you get more of a chance to be forced to play with players like that who are high level. Also when i play, i dont see any new players only smurfs.

Because you got banned there was a hard reset on elo. And honestly i dont think rank matters anymore, since there is too much boosters/boosting going on, also dont forget the alt accounts+ people who are aka "lucky" or "unlucky" I've seen plenty of gold/silver players that are better than diamond-challenger from experience, so dont worry about elo/rank cause they are all the same at the end of the day unless you are challenger #1

If he is a new account, matchmaking has no ranked mmr to start so it uses his normal mmr as the starting point. If he wins a lot of normal games and his normal mmr is high, he will be matched with gold level players to start his placement (same thing happened to this smurf of mine many moons ago. Of course this account is not a true "new player" so no games were ruined ^.^ I only use this to play with my true new player friends or whenever I need to wait out dodge timer ). Another possible scenario is he is duo with a silver/gold so the pre-made boosted mmr put him with silver/gold players.
