Alternative to toxic chat

So, this is just an idea, but there's a lot of people who are toxic in chat, but are legitimate players trying to win. They just get frustrated, and type the wrong things, and wind up getting bans. My proposal is instead of eventually perma-banning those players, why don't you just take all chat privileges from them? Everyone knows you don't NEED chat to play or win in League of Legends. It's not necessary, and you can communicate entirely with pings. Just take away the chat. Make it so that every player is on mute as soon as they come into the game, that way they can't see what's being typed at them either (to prevent harassment situations where they can't defend themselves at all). In my opinion, this is a win win. Riot still has players that are playing their games, they can't ruin games by typing toxic garbage all game, and they'll still spend money on the game. Perma-ban chat seems like a great solution to me. Reserve perma-bans for those players who just intentional feed, run it down, or somehow ruin games on purpose. People who play the game and try shouldn't be permanently banned simply for chat. Just my opinion though, let me know how you feel.

Riot tried this, and a statistically significant portion of those players ended up resorting to other, harder-to-detect methods of toxicity when things weren't going their way. As a result Riot opted for the current system, which doesn't cause that long period of trolling in ways that are difficult to identify.

Players who are toxic are not toxic because they flame others in chat. They are toxic because they have an attitude problem where they think it’s okay to make the game worse for others in any way, and they think that it’s acceptable to take their frustration out on others.

Notice how that attitude doesn’t say anything about “in chat”. Chat is not necessary for those players to express their negative and toxic attitude. When chat was removed from players long term (over thousands of games), they resorted to griefing, trolling, AFKing, and other less detectable and more subtle forms of taking their frustration out on their team.

The problem is not the chat. Take away the chat and they’ll still be toxic - unless they actually learn to reform their attitude. The permanent ban is Riot saying “hey, we’ve given you enough chances, we no longer want you here”.
