Reported a user for having an account name that featured the name of an ethnic/religious group followed by --- inmyoven. Later that day, the account name was changed to --- inmyfurnace. After presumed intervention by Riot, the account was changed to a random string of numbers. Today, the account has been changed to --- inmyapple. Thoughts? Some of my concern comes from Riots apparent promotion of toxicity by refusing to come down hard enough in the first place, and I believe the first instance should have resulted in a permanent ban.

Generally name changes are forced if the name is found inappropriate. If you keep changing it to something offensive, you can eventually be banned for it.

That's really part of the problem isn't it, the 'eventually' part? I hear a lot about how league is toxic, wouldn't taking a harder line against clear egregious toxicity be a better way of dealing with it?

Draconian policy has never been an effective policy. It's a policy that works, but it's proven to be so unpopular that the backlash against it is catastrophic.

Maybe, but there's a lot to consider. If you weren't allowed to change your name and Riot chose your new name for you, then people would be forced to save up 13K IP or spend money on a name change. If you could choose it, but your name had to be approved before you could use it, then you're out of the game until a Rioter has a chance to review it. Couple this with some people that might not know their names are offensive and you get a lot of truly confused players.

I think the way it's handled currently is the best option available. Few people abuse it enough to keep changing their name to be intentionally offensive, not enough to warrant changing the procedure entirely just to be harder on offensive names. If you were to take every "toxic" behavior and rank them on a scale, I'm willing to bet "offensive name" would be low compared to other forms of toxicity.

Didn't they assign random junk to a ~~new person's~~ newly changed name? And they'd only allow a name change after completing some sort of psych test? They probably stopped doing that though, but that's what I had heard.

Inactive accounts do have their names automatically changed, due to the policy regarding sitting on summoner names. Usually to "ISXXXXXXXXXX" where X is a random character. Offensive names simply prompt a name change. Never heard of a psych test to play LOL though.

But this is from 2015. I'm not sure if it's still a thing. And the survey was optional. It seemed like a longer process than just paying to change your name.

I doubt it's still a thing, Riot does many experimental things when it comes to League. Thanks for the link. Like I said, never heard of this before so chances are it had a short run.

Psych test?

Some video games do assign like “Guest######” or “Player######” to new players before their chosen name is reviewed.

Generally speaking those games don’t have enough manpower to review the names and the backlog increases from a few minutes... to a few hours... to a day... to a few days... etc.

I apologize if this was unclear in my prior post, but yes, there are some people that do abuse the current system and choose a different offensive name. My point was to give the benefit of the doubt to those that don't, not this person specifically.

If you reported him again, there's a decent chance that they'll ban him this time. - - - inmyapple isn't offensive by itself, but given the prior names, I'd believe in hostile intent on his part.

And it would be difficult for the system to pick up "/all apple means gas chamber" as a racist comment. So, I want him out of the game before he can do anything more.

I've seen really nasty summoner names lately, using the N word and other racist terms. I think it has something to do with what's going on around the nation with the white supremacy movement.
