It doesn't matter if someone have an abusive behavior with you in the first place, if you talk back by using offensive words or having an abusive behavior, you are considered violating the player behavior chart, thus you are toxic/punishable aswell.

The best thing to do in ANY CASE is to limit your interactions with the player (mute chat and, if they are excessives, mute pings).

Keep in mind that the punishment system will trigger only if a report is done. This goes in both ways. Make so you can't be reported for anything. Don't seek for any form of retaliation.

Seeing a lot of people complaining on the boards for getting punished because they were "trying to defend themselves", I feel like this was needed.

To be fair, a lot of the posts on the boards talking about getting banned for retaliating are complaining more about how the inter/troll/racist/flamer didn't get banned while they did.

Agreed my good sir. Too many times I see "Riot Please Help I was Banned For NO reason" or "Wrongfully banned" where the poster clips edited chat logs or other things. I believe that most people honestly know why they receive their bans.

I disagree.

You can banter with someone else (either an enemy or ally) in chat, and you two get along great and not mad at each other. So you can say things like "you are a boosted bonobo :DDD" and they reply with "sure am but at least I didn't get dropped as a baby", and it's all in jest. But then you can have some player who is essentially a spectator to the banter, and without saying anything about it, just say in their mind "yeah im gonna report these assholes".

If you get punished, your chat log will reflect lines such as "you are a boosted bonobo :DDD" or "sure am but at least I didn't get dropped as a baby" without the context of the friendly banter.

Context absolutely matters. Chat logs should not be observed in a vacuum.

So whenever anyone gets out of line with you in life, you are just going to cry and run looking for someone to tattle to and hope they make it all okay? The whole report system is a travesty, and the fact that such little things can trigger bans is almost as appalling as the fact that these millennial pansies are "offended" by anything and everything. I'm so glad this President isn't catering to offended sissies like the last 8 years.

Why is it that pings aren't reportable when there is a mute button, (which are abused to create toxicity more than anything else in the game) but chat with a mute button is reportable and results in bans for venting ANY sort of frustration? Kids need to learn how to man up and use the mute option if they don't like it.

You guys can shout this from the rooftops, but a big chunk of the player population will ALWAYS flame back/troll back at someone who wrongs them. Its human nature and it aint gonna change.

I have a story for this. It was a normal so the win or loss didn't really matter. My thresh stole 2 kills and decided he was adc, sold his items and left lane to roam. Kayn thought that a bigoted attitude was cool. Forgot the other guy, but he was pretty toxic nonetheless. They had 2 afkers. Easy win right? I am not the best adc player so it was hard for me to fight Zrya alone, thus I killed her 1 time and her me 3 times. Learning is what norms is for.

I got the turret and moved on. These people were just horrible. Saying words like N*ger and Fgot and just downright nasty things about me and each other. It was like Bronze 5 had an unplanned pregnancy with Satan. So much flaming.. I disliked them very much, but I did my job. I pushed, built counter items, even got Elder alone. But I only cleaned up fights, pushed towers, and was polite. Their afkers came back.

I joined them when they need me, but didn't touch the split pushing Yorick. They ended up feeding, flaming me for farming and getting 4 turrets,when they left me in the first place. They all ended up having a worse kda than me. We lost and I reported them. They reported me for trolling. They got banned. I did not, all 3 of them, got banned and I did not. Morale of the story flame like an adult, not like a 12 year old. [katarina-love]

Wow. I wish that would apply to every type of toxic behaviour. Unfortunately you can't snap when some troll interested your game because being toxic in chat is huge offense. But you can have "a bad day" 30 games in a row and still not be punished. Riot is inconsistent with their punishments and the reason is pretty much obvious.

I just wish that instead of getting banned for 14 days id get a chat restrict for like 2k games...i just cant hold it when other people talk shit to me...i cant just mute them unfortunately..i can communicate with my team through pings...no need for chat

There are certain key phrases that do trigger the system automatically. I do remember seeing a post about someone getting punished for telling someone to die to tower in aram, but they said it as "kys" "____, kys" and that triggered the system automatically.
