League Law: Support Sightstone Required?

For Riot: "GUIDELINES: This board is all about fostering a healthy community in which discussions can revolve around player behavior systems, in-game suspensions, or boards moderation. This includes topics on how the systems work, insight into why players were punished, and advice to help players improve moving forward." I'm not posting this in gameplay, I'm posting it here. There are only board GUIDELINES, not rules, and this topic even fits the guidelines, as it relates to the bold above. This topic is mainly about how support is to be played with regard to the Summoner's Code. I feel like the way I play support could get me banned, and that others feel the same, and I'm sure other roles with their play style. If you really think I'm wrong here, then please consult with other staff first, and also explain how this topic would be better elsewhere according to the guidelines, which I view as guidelines and not hardcore rules. I shouldn't have to include this whole paragraph, but I see moderation isn't perfect, proper rules and not just guidelines might help. A Rioter can delete this paragraph if this topic won't be deleted and I'll be pleased.

Due to some things I've seen/read and been told, I'm curious what players think and what the official position is regarding some things. This topic is for real discussion supported with reason and the Summoner's Code.

I've probably played the 5v5 S.Rift support role around 1-2% of my games, probably about equal with marksman, so 2-4% of my games bot lane. I get Sightstone on support more than not, but I feel that it delays items which could help more in lane or team fights. With 2-4 Ward Totem wards and 2 Control Wards, I feel I don't need and shouldn't be required to buy Sightstone, before mid-late game at least. Not long ago Riot did shift ward responsibility by limiting wards and adding the ward totems. In my experience, the players who've commanded me or others to buy Sightstone, don't even make efficient use of their own warding capabilities. I feel that many players rely on supports and expect supports to play in a way that makes up for flaws and deficiencies of the other 4 players. I think that all 5 players should make good use of their totem and should buy a Control Ward on their first or second recall. If every player set a DEFENSIVE(way too many players place them where they're destroyed after 30 seconds, mine last 15-45 minutes) Control Ward, and used their totem wards for either offensive vision or more defensive vision, then I feel a support wouldn't NEED to have Sightstone and play as a ward slave. Is this not what Riot intended?

So I'm curious what others think and why they think so.

  1. Do you play support?
  2. Do you buy Sightstone? How often? How soon?
  3. Do you think Sightstone is required as support(no matter what, must buy ASAP)?
  4. If yes to required Sightstone, is that also yes for supports who build for damage such as AP Sona/Zyra?
  5. Do you think Sightstone is still needed(or better than an alternative support item) if all 4 teammates also have a Control Ward and use totems efficiently?
  6. Do you think that regardless of how a support plays or what they buy, that a Sightstone is better at all points in a game?
  7. Do you think that no matter what changes ever happen, aside from vision removal, that supports will and should always be ward slaves?

Please regard this as an opportunity to give myself and many others some perspectives of how others view/play support, but this topic is mainly about how support is to be played with regard to the Summoner's Code.

sigh No, not purchasing a Sightstone as a Support is not punishable. Here, please read this thread and the linked reply;

Sightstone is not required, but it helps. I hate Riot decision to remove early game wards. IT seems Riot hates support players. The ban for "not having sightstone" and "not communicating" is very very bad sign. I have waited such case to arrive for 2 years now.

Support main here.

Sight Stone is nice if your team knows how to make use of it, or if the enemy's movements require it.

Sightstone is META. Not building META is not punishable.

Heck, I've seen people with a Sight Stone and still not ward. So what does that make them?

Do you play support?

  • Yes, often.

Do you buy Sightstone? How often? How soon?

  • Sometimes, 50/50ish, depends on the team I'm facing and my teams composition.

Do you think Sightstone is required as support(no matter what, must buy ASAP)?

  • No item is a must buy on any champion and RIOT hasn't ever penalized anyone for buying items and trying to use them in a game.

If yes to required Sightstone, is that also yes for supports who build for damage such as AP Sona/Zyra?

  • Depends on the game they're in. Sometimes Zyra needs one to help their team and the cdr it offers on other items helps.

Do you think Sightstone is still needed(or better than an alternative support item) if all 4 teammates also have a Control Ward and use totems efficiently?

  • Up for debate and happens to be why I think it's situational. If even just 2 people have a blue ward and everyone has a pink up there's not much reason to force someone to use a sightstone.

Do you think that regardless of how a support plays or what they buy, that a Sightstone is better at all points in a game?

  • Of course not.... this applies to ANY ITEM.

Do you think that no matter what changes ever happen, aside from vision removal, that supports will and should always be ward slaves?

  • This is certainly something that needs addressing. Many previous meta's and a bunch of complete jerks who think they know better have made it the supports "job" to ward and they can forget they even have a ward. It's incorrect and as I mentioned, if the team needs more vision then a support carrying a sight stone is probably the way to do it. They aren't the only ones that can make use of them either. A mage can easily have a sight stone, a top can and the jungler has a friggin jungle item that helps them ward. Like most all itemization... It's all situational.

I wouldn't be upset if it was
