Ban "GG"

GG is a phrase that should automatically be blocked. I just had a team surrender 4-1 at 20 when we were only down by 13 kills and had taken more towers than the other team, and had literally just finished getting a double kill. Our Tryndamere said "gg" after his third failed gank at about 12 minutes.

When someone says "gg" in team chat, it kills morale instantly. It subconsciously gives everyone the impression the game is already lost while simultaneously letting you know that at least one of you has given up entirely. If people would focus on playing instead of spending their time whining about how the game is already lost, they might find the tide shifting.

Furthermore, while we're at it, there should be more visual feedback for how pushed a lane is. Kills are important for momentum, but at the end of the day, you don't win the game by killing the other team 50 times. You do it by taking their nexus. I've been in at least three games I can remember where my team has won with a final kill count of about 20-50 because we stayed mobile and pushed effectively. And I've been in several more where the other team did it.

So many people are caught up watching self-styled "athletes" get astounding kills on eachother at Worlds that they fail to realize there's more to winning a game of League than getting the penta. So please Riot, censor "GG", or at least let people know at a glance that their team has control of the map despite being down in kills.

That is pushing it, its one thing if someone says GG easy. But GG has no harm at all at it. Even if it is used sarcastically, it often is just polite to say, even in a steamroll game.

I always say it even if I got or was doing the steamrolling since even if the enemy got fked, they still put a decent chunk of time into the game and I respect that and say GG for it.

Just because some people say it to be snide doesn't mean the thing should be removed at all.

We were down about 25-12. One ace and we were right back in that game, and really, the deaths were so spread out that there wasn't a huge level discrepancy.

A sarcastic "gj" isn't as bad for morale. It might annoy, and it's arguably toxic, but when someone says "gg" sarcastically ten minutes into the game, it's like he's saying "I give up, we can't win." It's not that I'm saying any kind of gg/"gg easy" should be banned. And sarcastic GGs do annoy me. It's more the idea of someone saying it to their team. It's the equivalent of saying "I'm done with you noobs, you'll never win this game." Even when that's not NECESSARILY true. It's not even the toxicity I want it banned for, it's the fact that it makes a lot of people who hear it give up themselves.

Put simply...

Sarcastic GJ = "Good job, asshat. That was a great flash into 5v1." Sarcastic GG = "Good game. We're through. No point in playing now, just phone it in until we surrender, everyone."

No no, I'm fine with a sincere GG. I speak specifically of the sarcastic GGs given from one teammate to another ten minutes into the game. In fact, I know banning GG is a thing that will never happen; it was more an eye-catch to bring attention to the real issue, which is that people give up games too easily on kill imbalance alone, even when well ahead on towers. And something needs to change to fix that.

Then you can't ban GG if you are fine with some ways people use it.

Saying GG alone and by itself isn't the problem. No, the problem lies in the players who like to use it to be jerks whether by saying GG very early on in the match (like after they got first blooded for example there) and/or they use it alongside other comments like "gg easy" or "gg newbs/noobs". I see no reason to ban the phrase just because some less than desirable people choose to use it irresponsibly.

Well that's not what bugs me. I mean it IS annoying, sure, but I've gotten used to it. It's when people say it to their own team that it bugs me, because it literally kills the spirit of the game. Base toxicity like "gg easy" is just a momentary eyeroll moment, but having one's own teammate say "gg" because you get down by five kills early on gives the entire team the incorrect assumption that the game CANNOT be won, and they stop trying.

Again, this is just the norm, not the rule. I'm an exception, and I've had teams where all four of the members aside from the defeatist continue trying after the fact, and some of those have turned out to be come-from-behind wins. What irks is when the majority DON'T ignore it, and let it make them think "shit yeah, this game is over, isn't it? guess I'll just give up..."

Part of competition is the thrill of coming back when you seem beaten. I think Riot should take measures to prevent that from happening. Again banning GG was more of an eyecatch, not a literal solution. I'd be more interested in visual feedback that lets you know "Hey, sure you're down in kills, but this game is still fairly close on objectives. Keep at it." Or maybe some kind of bonus reward for coming back when down on kills or gold for a long time.

It's a good idea in theory but the question is how would such a thing be implemented? I can definitely understand where you're coming from and have had my sets of games where we were down but continued to play and actually managed to make a come-from-behind victory as well, but implementing a visual reminder of sorts might just do more harm than good honestly. I would love to hear your thoughts/ideas on how such a thing would be implemented though.

Well, that's the million dollar question. :) As a rough theory, perhaps have a red and blue tint to the lanes on the minimap that stretches and intensifies in color when one team is ahead on towers in that lane. A way where you could glance at the map and go "It's fine, we're still in good shape." Or perhaps a "tug of war" sort of line on the ground in each lane that displays it.

In addition, you might have a sort of row of trophies at fountain that accrue each time you've killed dragon, to remind you every time you back that you're building up solid buffs. The little visual cues like that are my first thought on how I'd go about it.

Interesting. Well I know that in Splatoon during Turf Wars (the goal of which is to cover the arena with as much of your teams Ink as you can) the size of each teams Squids indicate how well/close both teams are. The bigger they are the better your team is doing turf wise. Something like this could maybe work in some way, shape or form (keyword: maybe).

That's fine advice, were it that it was something that simply made me go "AAAAAAGH", but everyone is missing the point of this post. Likely on purpose, given the nature of forum communities. The point of this post wasn't that insincere GGs made me angry, it was that it kills the morale of the team and makes everyone give up prematurely. It doesn't hurt MY morale any, because I know better than to think kills alone win games. But many don't see it that way, and when their teammate starts saying things like "gg surrender at 20", they just... stop trying. When in truth, if they instead redoubled their focus, they might pull of a great come from behind win.
