It is difficult to restrict the tone of a conversation without restrictions the participants.
People each have a certain online persona they tend to follow, and for many it is either a light minded one or a disparaging one.

The entire internet is a witch hunt dude. People seek out those who share their opinion and then form a nice little circle where anyone who doesn't agree is downvoted and passive or aggressively attacked. Any forum you go to, from "Raw Feeding Dogs" to "Religious Discussions" you'll find the same types of people vehemently arguing their point of view and taking anything other than complete agreement as an attack on their persons.
Not the boards.
