Is there a particular reason you feel this should be implemented?

Why does that matter

It's called fostering a discussion. I'm asking the OP what he thinks merits removing chat in its entirety.

Isn't that... obvious? This is by far the most toxic game on the internet.

Does that mean that there's absolutely, positively, 100% no reason whatsoever for the chat to exist? Is a bad reputation really reason enough to ignore the existence of tactical chat, positive communication, etc?

I don't buy it.

I'm saying having the OPTION of disabling it.

No one uses the chat in that way, dude. That's what pings are for. The chat is used to flame, troll, BM, and stuff like that. All chat doesn't even need to be in the game. And it's not because of a "bad reputation", because obviously the people that play the game don't notice this stuff happening, considering it happens every single game.

Oh really? Because I use chat quite frequently in my games and have never been warned or banned since I started playing in S2. The people being punished for chat related offenses receive them because they are the ones who are misusing said feature, and just because those small minority of people abuse it doesn't mean everyone does. Besides, Riot has stated numerous times in the past that they won't remove a feature just because a jerk would misuse it-they'll just remove the jerk instead. If you can't or won't use chat properly then that's a you problem right there.

Hah, nobody uses the chat for strategy? Nobody uses the chat for light-hearted chatter?

Bull.

The chat isn't only used to flame, troll, and BM. In fact, I've rarely seen it used for that. Hell, it's become a rarity to see people throwing up the "?" lately.

And it's not because of a "bad reputation"...

Well, when you say "This is by far the most toxic game on the internet", you're implying that the bad reputation is the obvious reason that chat shouldn't exist.

...because obviously the people that play the game don't notice this stuff happening, considering it happens every single game.

Prove it. Prove to me, that literally every single game has people abusing the chat.

Obviously you don't understand the concept of "hyperbole", so I'm not going to respond to anything you said

If somebody uses chat for positive communication, then there are obvious questions to be answered: What's the ratio of people using it positively vs. people using it negatively? How large is the benefit of positive communication? How large is the downside of negative communication? What alternatives (to keeping chat) are there to preserve the benefits of positive communication? What alternatives (to removing chat) are there to lower the impact of negative communication?

If nobody uses chat for positive communications, all of those questions are moot. And in the case of this particular exaggeration, I find that this seems to be the point. Overriding all potentially interesting points of discussion with a single handwaving argument.

Hyperbole as a stylistic device is fine. Hyperbole as a stand-in for an actual argument, and worse even, as an attempt to get rid of nuance, is both lazy and counterproductive to any kind of discussion.

Hm... last I checked, hyperbole is commonly used in an argumentative standpoint. I'm not sure how using it in such a way is lazy or counterproductive, when there aren't exactly statistics to provide you with. I'm going off of what I see, and I'm an average league of legends player. Not low elo, and not high elo.

As I said:

Hyperbole as a stylistic device is fine.

The problem is that your hyperbole is standing on its own. There is no argument that this hyperbole could be supporting. It only supports itself, meaning it is a cheap replacement for an actual argument. Hence why it's lazy.

I'm going off of what I see

And yet, by using hyperbole instead of trying to actually explain what it is you see, you are actively preventing people from understanding what it is that you see. You are making it impossible for people to see things from your point of view. Hence why it's counterproductive even for you specifically.

The worst bit, though, is that it's simply a statement that by itself is impossible to refute. But not because it's so logical and sound, but because a hyperbole like that can be considered in only two ways:

  • You can consider the actual point that has been exaggerated… which could be virtually any position less extreme than the one stated, making it too vague to address.
  • You can take it literally, which is a very precise statement and easy enough to attack… but sets that person up for the "You just don't understand hyperbole" response.

Overall there can be no sensible discussion on a hyperbole the way you used it. The best way to address an "argument" like this is simply not to address it at all. A hyperbole like that is effectively nothing but a discussion killer. Hence why it's counterproductive for discussions in general.

Short version: Using only hyperbole makes it everybody else's responsibility to identify what your actual position is. Just that nobody will actually ever do that.

Well I've been taking peoples advice in muting everyone in game, and I find games more enjoyable. However, I don't want to see what they say prior to game or in the lobby after.

Mute button, settings to disable chat.. and just not using your eyes to look at the chat box.
