They said they nerfed her so that the champs she countered had a better chance, while making the champs that counter her fuck her harder. Literal quote from a red on a Sona thread.

Yeah. Something about not wanting the matchup to be decided at Champion Select, and adding more counterplay bs.

The problem is that Sona is one of those binary champs, much like Xin. She either has the numbers to win or she doesn't; there's no potential to outplay her except by killing her before she can push buttons, since the only thing she needs to aim is her ult.
