Why a late Horrowing event won't be worth the wait.

So Riot has made the decision (rather quietly until it exploded too) that events from the real world and events from the game no longer need to be paired together. This was presumably done to allow some degree of 'greater creative freedom' when it comes to making content for their players. This ultimately is a weak line of thought for several reason.

Allowing your creative teams the chance to bring content is cool. Revolving it on an arbitrary timeline that they designed is not necessarily good or bad, but this case I would strongly argue it is bad. The reason it is bad is largely because of our expectations as a community.

Those that are from a background that celibate any of the holidays that Leagues holidays are based on have an innate connection to these events. Riot does not need to do any work to make hype for New Years, Halloween, or Christmas. Anyone from a culture that celebrates them already has a connection that Riot could likely never hope to create or even emulate from their own evens.

The connection isn't just from real world events either. By adhering to a cycle of in game events, such as the Harrowing, that line up with real world evens Riots made their own traditions. Someone who as played League for three or four years may have no idea what Christmas is, but they know that Snowdown happens in December, and there will be skins and other fair stuff for them to enjoy. In the case of this Harrowing Riot deviated from the expectations they themselves helped create.

So now the damage is done to some people. With the previous lore even we got the Burring Tides. An event that broke new ground in how lore interacted and shaped the game. The Shadow and Fortune, while well written did not hit the same bar they set for the first event. Now with a lack of skins to back it up, no word on the timing or nature of any event that may or may not come the time for our event traditional Harrowing event has come and gone with a decided whimper not a bang.

So I wonder, can Riot make a Harrowing even under these conditions that could possibly make up for both breaking the expectations we had of them, and the lack luster build up and communication we have received thus far? I think this will be a time Riot falls short. I hope I am wrong, and what ever they are planning with those new 'Harrowing' skins on the PBE will be great but I do not think I am.

What do you think? At this point can Riot make an event that will justify both how they decided not to have a Harrowing event quietly and how poor the communication that followed has been, or not?

Edited for typing errors.

Riot fucked this up royally. It's like Christmas day comes and goes and then sometime in June a friend/family member sends you a Christmas card. No one gives a shit at that point.

I don't see how they can "make up" for not having a Halloween event .. I say Halloween because now they are separated. Every game that I can think of had SOME kind of Halloween event. Worlds going on at the same time should not be an excuse. There is nothing at Worlds that should encompass any of the development team or marketing team. I include marketing because these events ARE marketing ploys for us to shell out cash to buy RP to buy event goodies. Riot is a profit driven company. Passing up on a holiday that would generate positive revenue is just stupid and leads one with a business mind to think that there was a major internal hiccup. But that being said they could have done things to mitigate it and still profit by making legacy Harrowing Halloween skins available and they could not even do that. Short of giving everyone a choice of free skins anything they do will be like a bad afterthought. If they make legacy Halloween skins available on Tuesday they will still make some money but not near what they would have made had they released it 1 week prior/3 days prior or the day of Halloween. The spirit of the holiday was lost.

**Do I think they can pull off an event? Yes.

Do I think they can create an event that would be fun/benefit everyone? Yes.

Will that event take the place of a missed Halloween event? Not likely. **

The holiday is over and now most people are just bitter. And honestly rightly so with the severe lack of communication they have had with their fan base. Thanksgiving dinner in December is not the same as Thanksgiving dinner on Thanksgiving, Christmas in July does not take the place of December 25th. Sure there are situations where a holiday could not be celebrated on the particular day but those are few and far between.

We had a Halloween dress up day on Friday at work. I missed work that day. Me going into work today (Monday) and wearing a costume is not going to roll over well and it is not going to be the same as it would have been on that Friday.

RIP Halloween 2015

I've had late christmas, and late birthdays... It's never the same.

Sure on some level you still get a gift, and spend time with friends and family.

But Riot didn't move Halloween, they only took away their part of it.

Instead of playing league with my friends in Halloween skins, showing off the new swag and playing together...

we played other games.

Riot can say "The Harroween can happen anytime"... But they didn't move Halloween. And it's foolish and arrogant to think that the Harroween was anything but a Halloween event. It's like 1 store saying they'll do a Black Friday sale on December 1st... Sure, they may have some what of a sale... but it's not the real thing, not at all.

Horrowing threads are being deleted. Someone at riot doesn't want the community to talk about it.

No, the time for a harrowing event has come and gone, now if they want to make up on it, a killer Snowdown event would be awesome. they could show us they still know how to do seasonal events. Plus maybe we could get some more creative skins instead of over saturated zombie themes.

I know I'm not going to buy the skins, just on principle now.

I think that having the harrowing come during other times of the year is fine.

It just has to come at Halloween, too.

I honestly believe, yes they can make up for it but it would be extremely difficult. I mean, the Halloween hype has pretty much died off and i believe that it should come out on the date, it honestly lifts some of the expectations. By not doing it with the event they are actually making it harder on themselves imo. But yes they could make up for it, but somehow i doubt they would have the time and effort to put together something that would suffice. But you know, they could surprise me.

i'm saying, how can you just pass up halloween and not do anything? i work at a large pizza company which i will not name, and we even did something for halloween. i had a manager running around in a large boys ninja turtle costume and a pink wig ffs... the least they could have done is unlocked the harrowing skins...

Bixits11/2/2015, 1:59:38 PM4 votes

All I want is the past Harrowing bundles released in the shop. I don't give two shits about an event at this point--they already ruined it for me.

It's too late riot has already shown to us that they care more about E-Sports than anything else.

Why a late Horrowing event won't be worth the wait

I can tell you why in three words. Zombie. Slayer. Theme.

ABlueQuaker11/3/2015, 8:27:44 AM2 votes

The way I see it, Riot could have done 3 things:

  1. Untie The Harrowing from Halloween. Full Stop. (Which Riot did and it ended in disaster).
  2. Untie The Harrowing from Halloween. Replace The Harrowing with a straight-forward Halloween event. Classic and Simple - not even any need for it to be cannon with the Game's Lore.
  3. Have multiple Harrowings in a year - an annual one and a non-fixed, optional one that would occur sporadically.

Riot, however, decided to be lazy and take the shit option and pissed everybody off.

Rolldembones11/2/2015, 5:27:18 PM2 votes

I would say not. To do that would require too much that they won't do. A custom map, video and over the top skins is what they would have to do at this point.

On a side note I was disappointed with the harrowing, and I don't know who won worlds.

Fadedpf11/2/2015, 11:33:18 PM2 votes

Give us something like a good icon / free skin / rune sale / anything at all because we are all pretty pissed about this.

Krigjer11/3/2015, 2:23:07 AM2 votes

Another point to add: I don't go to Halloween parties, and I live too far away from family to spend Christmas with them. Ingame holidays are how I celebrate.

And as I've said in multiple threads, the Harrowing started as a Halloween event- we have Pumpkin Head Fiddlesticks and a ghostly Nocturne skin for crying out loud. It's fine if you don't want to have a narrative that only gets told once a year. Change the name and don't release Halloween-themed skins AFTER the holiday is over. That's like releasing a Santa Bard skin in February because 'The Snowdown doesn't represent Christmas in Runeterra anymore'.

TheWoollyMammoth11/2/2015, 7:44:05 PM1 votes

I'm just going to keep my hopes up for this being a hint that the snowdown this year will be hit by the most powerful harrowing to date. The entirety of valoran getting smashed full force by the evil of Mordekaiser and his black mist. It would be fended off by certain aspects of each area. Icathia would just eat it... I would have a mini loregasm from the thought of it. I don't want to repeat what people where saying during the time of the great retcon (I will always be a summoner!) But perhaps we really should wait? I mean, the lore team has been doing some next level stuff when it comes to events.

Yo! @BioLuminescence don't suppose you could throw some form of cookie our way? preferably in the shape of jack skelington?

Everyone calls Riot greedy and only caring about money, but when they make a decision that doesn't seem like one based on greed or money everyone flips out and calls them stupid... Its a game event, one where YOU spend money... Why does it matter when or how it comes out? Its not like your life is ruined... if it is than you need to redo your priorities.
