Lore has been ignored

And I just don't understand the justification behind it. Earlier today in the Gnar Q&A, Riot Opelia stated that Riot had been giving the lore some good TLC this year. This really perked my ear up because I have to ask the obvious question: Where? Where is this lore that you've been giving TLC to? There are so many issues right now with the Lore Department that it's frustrating.

  1. Lore is released with champion releases. There is never (highly rare) a time that lore is released separate from a champion release. This creates massive periods of no lore, especially with the release schedule we've had this year.

  2. Rioters seem to not be on the same page about anything lore related. Opelia stated that she was surprised there were so many people so enthused with lore. I don't know how long she's been here, but all I could think was...where have you been? Lore sucking has been a major concern for lore fans since the Journal of Justice was discontinued. The major issue being that there is no lore.

  3. Speaking of not being on the same page, it's really pathetic that we have a good Q&A about Gnar and Rioters responding give very subtle clues and try to be very vague about information that deals with Gnar's history about how he got frozen and such. Then, if you hop on over to the LAS forums, a Rioter clearly states that Anivia froze Gnar to stop him from stopping some major thing and that the people who killed Gnar's parents WERE Watchers. And yet I look at our Q&A and see "We don't know who could have frozen him...maybe Lissandra? Or Anivia? Or someone else with ice..." and "We don't know if they're Watchers...who really does know? It was so long ago..." Like stop giving me bull crap and give me information. Why the heck are you so secretive about lore?

That's something that I really want to discuss. Riot, why are you so secretive about your lore? You keep saying you have this intricate lore that you all know at Riot and that it's super good, but then you don't give us any information on it. You take three months to release any lore, if not longer, and that lore has to do with a new champion, rarely addressing concerns from other lore. I still have no idea what happened with the Freljord. Had a big event, people chose sides, was told it was going to effect the lore....nothing. Then there's the Trundle debacle of his relaunch and how Kitae is trying to persuade people saying how many more stories they can tell with Trundle now that he's centralized and not just a random troll from some tribe that's all gone. No. There are no more of these stories you said would be told. Maybe they're told around the water cooler at Riot, but we the fans are deaf to them because you won't open your mouths and say anything.

Look, I don't dislike Riot. And I know that you've stated many times that you feel there's just a much more engaging way to show off lore than to just write it down in the JoJ that rarely anyone read. And while I applaud your attitude on this, is it really worth it? I mean if we got a JoJ every month, we'd get more information at least. As of now, it just seems like you leave things hanging forever because you're never given an opportunity to continue the story. How could you? Without a new champ coming out, you apparently aren't allowed to tell lore in any other way. You spend so much money making these music videos and cool infographics that are cool and do tell lore and people love....but did it matter? Yea we all caught that Jinx dreams of destroying Piltover and that's her personality and we get it. We love the video. I love that video. It was sick. But how much work and effort and resources were put into that one video that doesn't give much lore at all, and the lore department called it a "job well done"?

I want lore. Riot constantly says in threads that ask about lore that they want more lore too. Then why isn't there more? There is a time and place to be super creative and awesome, and I love that Riot does that. But you neglect the downtime in between. At the pace we're going, it'll be 2030 before I find out what happened in the Freljord, and that would be a very hopeful guesstimate. It'd probably be much longer. Is the Lore Department being held back by others at Riot from being able to tell stories, or is it just that the Lore Department is lazy? I mean...I don't know how else to say it but like this. There is a serious lack of lore. Period. If I was told to create lore for a game and I came up with the amount that the community sees, I'd be fired from my job. There would be no second chances. I would be told that I have not done my job. Because even if I have this great idea in my head, written down in Microsoft Word, etc., fans aren't seeing it. And they don't know it's there. It took Riot 9 months to slip on the forums that Lissandra was blind. Like that's good stuff to know. Why was that not told before?

I think I've made my point. I could type on and on about the lack of lore, but it would start getting cyclical coming back over and over to how the community wants lore, Riot wants lore (so they say), Riot doesn't provide lore. I don't know if it's the Lore Department not doing their job or someone at Riot not letting them tell us or if they have no idea how to give lore to a community of craving fans. I really don't. All I know is that right now, League of Legends is the biggest game on earth. And I will promise you this. It isn't because of a fantastic Lore Department. The Lore Department is a joke right now. There's a reason people say "League has lore? What is lore? Lore? Pff...Riot gave up on that stuff years ago..."

So I guess I'll end with these questions and be done.

  1. Riot, you say you want lore just like we do. Then why are we not getting it? Why do we have to scrap and look everywhere for any little piece of information?

  2. Is the Lore Department restricted on how much lore they are allowed to release?

  3. Why is Riot so against doing any form of written lore (such as JoJ style) for fans? It at least gives them SOMETHING instead of the nothing we're getting now.

  4. Does Riot believe it is worth it to restrict lore to champ releases and not give any at other times?

  5. Why is Riot so secretive and vague about their lore? Why don't you want us to know information about the stories happening in Runeterra? And why do we have to go to the oddball server forums (LAS) to get straight answers about lore instead of here on NA, where the same questions are asked, but we get vagueness and confusion?

Riot, do something about your lore. It's just....not there. No matter how much TLC you think you've given it.
