What drives a person to verbally attack you?

I was playing with some friends last night in a normal draft. I was first time Naut jungle since I was last pick and other junglers were banned. (In the first place, I don't even jungle.) I figured okay, I'll try something new. I didn't know that people like to counter Naut very hard. And that the enemy bot lane would be constantly coming to kill me every time I was blue side (they won the lane I guess, but not THAT hard.). So early in the game I make one comment, that I'll end up seriously regretting. They invaded and the enemy alistar bucked me to safety. So I decided to joke and say "thanks ali! 6th man is always appreciated"

And then comes the rain of fire.

Seriously. They (two of the enemies) nit-picked everything, cussed me out, and attacked me in a personal nature. "Learn to smite noob, you ***** **** jungler" "**** u" "your ***** you ***"

(PS the learn to smite thing happened when I died at drag and drag was too high to smite. so.)

Yes I'm starring things out. But you get the gist of what happened for 20-30 minutes straight. Yes, I know I should have muted. I don't know why I didn't mute, I'm usually very good about that.

But seriously. What drives a person (in this case two people) to become so hateful over one remark. I've had that remark made to me when I'm alistar. I expect it. At my elo, it's normal for an ali to accidentally save someone. Obviously, I won't be doing it again. Heck, after that I'm thinking of just turning off all-chat despite the fact that I sometimes get to make friends with some of my opponents.

Fact of listening and defending one's own personal core of innate instincts reflecting your core value system is a magnificent Bottom-Line to own, and core values to own.

A strong learning lesson. Maybe could say the comment again next time with adding, "nice effort, when I champion alistar I sometimes think this about me and would like to share this with you 6th man, good going." Though if this is bantering, then that might be the specific of the lesson there alone. Could be possible the person Champion with Alistar, might have to have had tried to adhere to the punishment standards for conclusions in other games. There might be nothing wrong with what was shared, but try to remember people might be more sensitive with potential bantering chat sounds. Also remember if the chat did not get far out of hand verbally, they are allowed to own their opinions. I can see length of time to rain down a level of bombardment being mean.

As far as why they did? I am not them, and try to spend less time in owning negative thought processes in analysis.

In all honesty, I see at least a dozen similar "fails" from both sides of the Rift when I'm in game. If someone points it out, 90% of the time a failed flash or a missed smite or miscalculated headbutts or even Blitzcrank pulls which pull a Sejuani or Amumu into the team is something me and my friends comment on in a manner quiet similar to yours. Of the 90% times we make a mention of it by saying "nice pull xP" or "best flash NA" etc, we have yet to receive a response as such as yours.

I only play normals and have not played ranked yet but usually even the opposing player finds their mistake funny to some extent and laughs it off in my experience. Perhaps the ranked games are more serious with people extremely bent on not losing ELO and thus those mistakes frustrate them to a greater degree. If that does happen and they get really upset then a simple "dw I've done that loads of times too" or something similar to diffuse the situation on your part is all that's needed assuming a logical and understanding person is receiving your comments.

If someone still gets upset and starts to cuss and spews garbage at you (for what should have been a tension relieving moment in the game really) then it is a fault on their part. The game is meant to be enjoyed and if people think it is worth it to drop your own character and mannerism on a non-aggro comment such as that ... then they are playing for the wrong reasons.

You sound like a fun person and a great sport so keep that up and don't let oddballs get to you. I have seen much much worse saltiness and it is really just saddening that some people are taking something enjoyable and refreshing as this game and finding ways to bring anger, resentment and toxicity into it; I just pity them and move on.
