This could be a thing that flashes on the screen every minute after you hit level 9 and havent upgraded your trinket.
It could also just be a simple reminder to upgrade them. Most dont even remember and have to be reminded. Others will pay the gold just to get rid of the annoyance. It's a nearly flawless system.

if I'm a mid mage and I have 1600 gold when I go back... should I upgrade trinket or buy a NLR?

Maybe at some point... but smart players go back when they have the gold for what they want... and an adc or an apc may not be in base when they have spare gold. That's all I'm saying. If you have the choice between a major item breakpoint and a trinket upgrade, please... don't avoid the item breakpoint. As long as you're using what trinket you have and using your gold effectively, I don't care if you upgrade your trinket.

Thankfully due to the possible AP item changes, midlaners will be able to get that trinket upgrade a little sooner with the reduced NLR.

No, smart players go back when it is advantageous in general, depending on the situation on the map, not just to buy. If "smart players" backed as soon as they could buy, they could just randomly leave a lane that is pushing and lose a tower, or dragon, or get a teammates killed.
You don't just randomly stop in the middle of doing something bot because you have exactly 1550 gold for a BF sword.

I have legit seen (on more than one occasion) an adc buy multiple green wards, and not upgrade their yellow trinket. Same with top.
It isn't always money as people claim (just a b.s. excuse). People just don't think. But, ya know, it is obviously the supports fault for not warding, or whatever passing the blame excuse they got ganked with no vision.

Then you're not using your back times efficiently if you 'always have enough gold for it'. If you ever watch the LCS, a lot of the time they're timing their backs around the EXACT amount of gold they want. They try to set up the wave and back at just the right time. You'll hear the casters talk about it too....
choosing when you back is one of the hardest skills to learn, but if you can get a power breakpoint at a time when an enemy can't... that is by FAR the best way to back, even if it means you can't afford trinket upgrade. I used to try to time my backs around that, but I wasn't always successful. I'd try to get the enemy to concede enough time for me to back as soon as I could afford what I wanted... and when I was successful it felt really good.
But again... if I need, say, 1400 gold for an item breakpoint and I go back with 1510... what should I do... buy part of the item breakpoint and upgrade my trinket, or buy the item and a pink? Obviously the latter is the RIGHT decision. But according to this thread, the former is the right decision...and that's encouraging people to play badly.
Xonra2 votesHonestly none of this would be an issue if Riot would just suck it up and give a proper tutorial, given all the aspects of this game you don't actually learn about unless someone else tells you.
There should be an extended tutorial for basic stuff, similar to the current one (not that b.s. with the game telling you to build Ashe with Thornmail, but the "battle" tutorial.).
Should be some things telling you about trinkets, which there is nothing of, telling you about bush vision better, making you place a ward for example, or some little mini tutorial saying "buy the warding trinket - now place it is" then something like "the enemy has placed a ward in x bush. Sweep the bush and kill the ward", in that female announcer voice.
There is plenty they should do, and these tutorials would teach new players this stuff and help reinforce it for others. As it is now people just do whatever and try to copy the pros in the most awkward and ass backwards ways, and end up doing none of it correctly, or at all, because they don't know why people do it.

I'm not going to ruin my lane by staying to long to farm the extra gold or only go back to base with 250 gold on me.

They fixed that bug. It doesnt go on cooldown when you upgrade it. Only if you swap it. And its 60 seconds or 70 if you bought red trinket upgrade.

Barely ever works for me. Maybe if im lucky, one will actually do it on their next back. It doesnt just happen. They have the attitude of "I need damage so im going to save up for x item". While the support is asking them to upgrade their trinket, they refuse saying "I only need 400 more gold to get Deathcap/IE. Im keeping my gold for that."

When theyre in the fountain isnt decent enough, Simply because they are probably in the shop already when the backing ends and they have what they want open and ready to buy. Its already bought the instant they get back to fountain. So a constant reminder would be better. Simply for people actually noticing it and buying the upgrade.
