Is dota 2 as dependent as league is on auto attacking? Basically, is every game 4 people trying to protect the vag adc? Or does every avatar have to use strategy and depend on skills.

Auto attacking is far far more important in Dota. You need to auto atk well to farm in lane (most heroes can't support farming with mana).
There are hyper carries dependent on right click dmg only. There are strats where you run a 4protect1. In the pro scene tho this has fallen out of favor. You can run deathball teamfight, push, split push, gank, etc strategies which focus less on your ability to stand and trade right clicks and more on your ability to take objectives using skills positioning and map awareness.
DoTA2 is more based on who can get their skills off first and blow you up, because there are no skill shots in DoTA really, so their skills are point and click and boom you're dead.
