What is considered toxic?

So I just played a game as irelia vs a malphite top. After getting a kill which was really close I said in all chat "XD" the malphite said in all chat "Dont think that you are good just because of this"

Later on in the game I had snowballed and was doing well so naturally I felt rather confident and silly so I tower dove their lucien getting the kill. I made it out of the tower with a bit of health when suddenly the enemy malphite launches across the lane with his ult and kills me entirely ignoring his thresh and taric and syndra who were fighting the rest of my team. Laughingly I said "Malphite so good, he ults just one person" I admit yes it was a snarky comment but it was more in light of malphites comment from earlier. it instantly resulted in him saying that he muted me and that he was going to report me for being toxic. (pretty sure he was the only one to report me) Aside from what I mentioned before the only other all chat comment I made was about feeling bad for killing thresh so often.

My question is was my comment really toxic? To me it doesn't feel like it was, but I want to ask others. If so I guess ill stop being so Id just like to hear from the community. What is the minimum of "toxicity" We all know easy examples of toxicity from the lyte smite threads, but what about the minimum?

TL:DR got reported for making a snarky comment based off something an enemy said earlier

Eh. It was rough, and probably unnecessary, but I don't think that it's punishable by itself.

I suppose the best thing to call it would be "borderline". If you had game after game full of this kind of comment, then it could fall into the realm of toxicity. If it was an isolated or uncommon incident, then not so much.

Of course, I'm basing this on the assumption that you didn't continue to harp on the issue, as that tends to bring things into the realm of toxicity fairly quickly.

Id like for you to explain to me why it is considered "rough", As for unnecessary isnt any dialogue between teams unnecessary unless it falls under the realm of telling the other team someone is afk or to offer congratz on a good play or game?

I used the term "rough" to indicate that while it was not necessarily negative, it was also not a positive comment.

I described it as unnecessary because it's never "necessary" to insult, bash, or belittle another player, even in jest. That doesn't mean it's not acceptable to do so in jest, or in a light-hearted spirit. My point was less about the necessity of the communication and more about the necessity of the type of communication.

Strictly speaking, no communication between teams is necessary. It's perfectly possible to remain a neutral - or even positive - player without ever using /all chat. In a manner of speaking, however, some types of communication can be determined as more unnecessary than others. Your comment falls clearly into this category.

However, as I noted, it's not nearly enough by itself to determine overall toxicity. If I'd seen your case in the Tribunal, and that was the worst line you had, I'd almost certainly Pardon it (unless there was just a LOT like it).

Well I guess one question I have is when did jesting become unnecessary? For me ive played games my entire life and regardless of being board games (such as DnD or even simple jumaji) or video games ive always seen jesting one another as part of the game. It made it more fun and as long as it wasnt straight up cruel in nature it was okay. Its always allowed for the players to be more engaged (of course there are always that take it too far) but is even a simple jest really that bad? I mean thats part of the game, you see it in professional sports where jests are taken lightly and its a funny moment. I know it happened in my highschool sports, and with almost every group I play with its almost required to do it. So i guess its just alien to me that a simple jest could be taken as toxic. Heck we even see these sort of jests in the LCS and riot is fine with them.

That's more-or-less the gist of my point.

There's nothing wrong with jesting. But it's important to recognize that what you consider to be a joke, someone else might not. And it's a reviewer's job, therefore, to determine where the line of "too far" is. And it's particularly notable that tone is very difficult to get across in text, particularly the markers that separate a light-hearted jab and a back-handed insult.

In fact, depending on the context of the comment, that exact statement (with no changes) could be read either way. Which is why I've repeatedly stated what I have about whether or not I would punish a case with that line. It strongly depends on other aspects of the case, as the line itself is not sufficient to push a Punish decision.

To address the specific question you ask: A jest at another player's expense can always be determined as unnecessary, particularly over chat. This is particularly true when you don't know the other player personally.

I would not consider your comment toxic. But you should always be careful of what you say. Sore losers want to be treated like little puppies. I think the origin of toxicity is about one player making a stupid comment, (for example: Irelia, you suck) and others getting dragged into this behavior as well. So if a team ends up flaming each other because of one or two guys. They are considered toxic. Of course the original meaning drifted away a little and the word toxic is now used for any kind of flaming or in your case just to find a reason to report the well doing opponent.
