You shouldn't be initiating a teamfight as a squishy mage. You should be following up 99% of the time. Rank 1 Mage should be called trainee or something. Call rank 5 tank Initiate instead.

"Initiate" is a common term in fantasy games for someone just starting magic training.
Initiate is not referring to the mage's role in teamfights.
It is instead referring to someone who is starting training as a mage.
Initiate is a fairly common fantasy term that represents these mage-in-training at the start of their training, and in this context this makes a lot of sense for League of Legends to use this term.
It is not a reference to their role in teamfights. With the exception of Fiddlesticks and Lissandra, mages should never be initiating teamfights, and "initiate" does not refer to that.
