I am looking for a sustained damage mid lane and Zyra and Azir stood out (no I do not want heimerdinger). I only have enough to buy one but regardless I will be buying the other. Which one should I buy? If neither please list who I should buy and why.

Zyra is trash after her last nerfs which basically destroyed her mid and support.
I like Brand, since you asked for other. He has strong damage, then his passive will let you keep the damage up until you can use another spell.
Out of those 2, if you need a support, then Zyra. Otherwise, Azir
i'm going to have to say azir, because i heard hes a huge lane bully. also i've never lost to a zyra (and when i have, it wasn't because she carried, it was because her team carried her) so zyra is pretty weak. if you want a real fking terror of a mage, buy syndra, she is a monster or annie, also a strong choice and cheap to.
Don't buy azir, he will blow your house up
I've played a bit of zyra and a ton of Azir (main)
Zyra is easier to learn and does have some great damage but she suffers from being extremely squishy and immobile . So she can have a hard time nowdays.
Azir has a bit of mobility, some CC, a shield, and an ult that can be used to either disengage or completely fuck people . His damage is pretty good in lane and fantastic late game. + he can push objectives on his own which is nice thing to have as a mage. (nothing worse then doing no damage to turrets and watching team mates waste time after an ace)
I found him a little weird to get used to but worth it in the end .
It seems like Riot designed Azir to be everything that Zyra couldn't be in the midlane. Both have extremely high learning curves but honestly Azir is just flat out better.
Azir is amazingly fun, and very strong in the right hands (despite crying that he is underpowered) He has a steep learning curve, and his kit lacks some needed clarity, but once you get the hang of him, you will be making plays and shanking bitches all day.
Zyra in comparison is kind of.. meh. She can dump out plenty of damage, and her ult can be game changing, but she lacks any mobility, whereas a late game Azir is actually a pretty mobile champ. he can reposition himself easily to get a better vantage point for shanking teams, Zyra really cant.
