I was under the impression that rank is suppose to be lowered at the end of the season; that's the point of the reset, right?
Well I ended gold V last season and now I'm gold IV after my placements. Last season I was placed in silver after ending Gold V, and I went 7/3 in placements (just like this year).
It's just weird, not complaining. Has this happened to anyone else?

It reuses your MMR from the season before, if you keep winning you can really beef up your MMR and just skip divisions, this also doesn't apply to just start of season placements. You can be say S5, win most of your games and when it's time for your S4 promos, you'll jump multiple divisions based on how much your MMR increased. Really, it's basically just the system's way of getting you to it's perceived skill level faster.
