@Riot, with new LeaverBuster, we need network tests in-client

So I found out about the new LeaverBuster you're implementing, and I think that's great; anything to deal with AFKs is a good thing. That said, I find it silly that one Ranked dc or client crash can put you under discipline when there is no good way to test your connection beforehand. Personally, anecdotally, I live on-campus at the resort I work at, and the WiFi speed and latency (Comcast itself is pretty stable, but the WiFi varies depending on how many people are using it) can fluctuate wildly depending on where I am on campus and what time of day it is. I've stopped playing in my room, and now cart my laptop to the Administration building lobby, because my buddy reached LeaverBuster level 1 just for playing in our hall on an off day. What I would like to see is three things:

  1. Test my connection even in the launcher. It usually takes a good five minutes or so to download and install patches, so that's time that should not be wasted evaluating my connection. And don't just show me the data, analyze it. Let me go read Facebook while I'm not playing. Do I have ping spikes? Did I lose connection to na.leagueoflegends.com a few times?

  2. Keep analyzing my connection once I'm in-client and even in-game too. I'm OK with waiting five or ten minutes before I start playing if it means I can save myself some DC grief. I just don't want to babysit a custom bot (read: worthless) game to find out if I can play for reals. If I can go screw around on the Boards or read blogs or do whatever I normally do on the Internet for ten to twenty minutes, then come back to find a yes/no/maybe/probably, that's not a waste of time.

  3. Show the data at all times, even in-client. I want to see the verdict, yes, but I also want to see the data itself. This is a power user/nerd thing, but it'd be useful to have, even if it was just tucked away. (Maybe I could click on the network analysis to see the real-time monitoring data?)

I worry that despite having a decent connection, I could still be penalized for something not only out of my control, but that you have not provided a good way to test for. I support the new LeaverBuster, but I want to make sure that it doesn't screw me over.

Just a couple technical notes:

  1. The "client" probably isn't connected all the time to the same servers that are running the games.

  2. You probably don't want to have a million+ players constantly pinging the game servers. That's pretty much what a DDOS attack does, so adding a "constantly monitor your connection" feature to the client would basically be Riot DDOSing themselves.

  3. Fire up a custom match for a few minutes if you're concerned?

They need to get rid of this leave buster crap all together, it's a lazy system that is so flawed I don't even know where to start. There should be an option where your team votes if someone should get flagged by leave buster if the person is idle for more then 5 minutes. If it is a connection problem or client problem that dcs you and you get back in the game and still win, you shouldn't automatically get flagged by leave buster- that should be your teams decision if you get flagged because it effects them and only them.

As it is right now lots of people are getting screwed by leave buster because of client problems or server problems that is out of their control and yet because you are to lazy to install a vote to flag option they are getting suspended.

I'm currently suspended on my main because 5 outta 10 games someone was using the new exploit to 1 hit people. Why should I stay in a game just to feed them while they prolong the game to see how many kills they get? Then on the 11th game I get a client freeze on champ select yet I could still talk in chat. So I had no idea I had to exit out and restart because it appeared as if the game was just taking along time to start. I get in the game 10 minutes, come back and win and get honored only to get suspended and the game not count in my promos because your client failed to do something.

Stop with this excuse that leave buster works - it's like blowing up a city to kill 20 terrorists but killing 3,000 innocent people in the process because it was easier.. then saying the system worked cause the 20 terrorists are dead.

I'll go out and say it.. That is crooked tactics to screw people over that give money to this game just to suspended them on problems do to your client. I already know Riots tactics and thinking because I know other games that use this tactic.

They start off as a small game where players mater and then get big and become greedy for money and start looking for the best way to ban/suspend someones account hoping that person is addicted enough to the game that they will make another account and spend more money.

So if you really care about your player base, stop making new maps and flash art for champions and start fixing your flawed systems that are screwing people over that don't deserve it. There have been thousands of ideas of how to improve it and you ignore almost all of them.

I think their current plan for this is far too severe and is not going to help the issue. A person who dcs or has computer issues or encounters in an in-game bug is not going to be able to rethink this behaviour. Essentially they're getting punished for something that is quite likely outside of their control since most people lack the skills to adequately troubleshoot their computer/connection on their own - hell most people lack the skills to recognize when an issue is on their end vs Riot's end if these forums are any judge...

And I REALLY hope Riot has improved their tech for detecting server issues... because if anyone EVER gets this low priority queue for a legitimately Riot side issue, these forums are going to explode.

I also hope that the system detects people who get a 'bugsplat' and gives them forgiveness from this, since bugsplats are typically not something a player can deal with.

Just play a custom match before ranked like you are supposed to.
