I'ma go ahead and disagree with you on this one. I respect George Lucas for the original concept of Star Wars, but other than that he's a shit writer.

According to the end credits, it was basically JJ Abrams doing all the writing and directing. The only place George Lucas had in the credits was, "Based on characters created by George Lucas".

Star Wars is a Disney property now. Lucas can't hurt us anymore.

I'm saying George Lucas's movies are subpar at best. The only reason they even got popular in the first place is because the effects were ahead of their time and Harrison Ford (and partly Carrie Fisher) is a fantastic actor. The books however, were fantastically well written, particularly the Darth Bane Trilogy and The Legacy of the Force series.

The Force Awakens was also terribly written. SPOILER ALERT, DO NOT READ THE REST OF THIS IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE MOVIE YET.

The entire plot of the film was loosely held together with coincidental meetings, huge levels of main protagonist sudden skill development, and main protagonist powers of survival when they clearly shouldn't. Not to mention the main villain Kylo Ren was an absurdly dumbed-down version of two incredibly well developed characters from the Legacy of the Force book series, those characters being Ben Skywalker and Jacen Solo.

You're telling me that Kylo Ren, a Sith Lord and a former Jedi that trained directly under the motherfucking Grand Master of the Order gets held off by Finn, who has never been trained in the Force and just picked up his first lightsaber today, then gets his ass handed to him by Rey, who is essentially less than a padawan learner? Not only that, you're telling me Rey can also do advanced Force techniques like the Jedi Mind Trick on someone that's already wary that she's attempting to do it? Also that that particular storm trooper wouldn't just be like 'yo shut the hell up' and smash her in the head with the butt of his rifle?

And finally, the entire plot of this movie is the exact same goddamn plot of Return of the Jedi except instead of Ewoks fighting Stormtroopers we get to see it from the viewpoint of a traitorous and cowardly Stormtrooper.

You can like the movie all you want, that's entirely your opinion, but don't anyone sit here and tell me Abbrams and Lucas are the Gods of Sci-fi just because they pandered to children and obsessed fans. I love Star Wars, but I cannot say that this or any of the others were good movies.

Well, even with the problems in The Force Awakens (TFA), it's writing is still much better than the cringey shit we got when George Lucas was lord and master of the entire production, a la the Prequel Trilogy. I make no assertion as to good or bad, only that Abrams at the writing helm did a much BETTER job than Lucas.

Never read the EU books, so I can't really contend with how well/poorly they are being interpreted into TFA, but I think some of what bothered you has explanations that can be gleaned from the movie.

Kylo Ren is not represented as a true Sith Lord to me. He's young, barely of age to drink alcohol. He's too tempermental and prone to outrages. Even though anger leads to Darkness, the Sith Lords such as Vader and Sidious didn't explode in childish outbursts like Kylo Ren did.

Kylo Ren is a Sith Lord merely by default, as he is the apprentice to Emperor Snoke. The orders of the Jedi and the Sith are practically gone, and Force users are not common. Kylo is young, and his training far from complete. Christ, I'm pretty sure it's HIS FAULT Rey awoke to her Force sensitivity. She saw into Kylo Ren's mind while he tried to invade hers. He left himself vulnerable, he didn't protect himself. It was after that moment that Rey gained a prescient level of Force aptitude.

Kylo Ren caused the Force to Awaken in Rey. She got her power from him, indirectly. Probably gleaned the Force mind control techniques subconsciously.

Should really check out the EU, like I said before, specifically the Legacy of the Force series and the Darth Bane Trilogy, they're both great places to start out.

Young or not, he did an atrocious job as a villain. As the movie went on he actually degraded in power while his opponents rapidly gained power, strictly because the plot demands it. In the beginning he's able to do insanely advanced techniques, able to completely freeze living creatures and blaster shots, in the end he's unable to defend himself from a cowardly stormtrooper and a complete novice. That's just straight up rushed character development, sloppy writing. This isn't the only example of this in the movie or in the series. The entire franchise is written this way.

Well he DID get gut-shot by Chewie, maybe that contributed?

I'd totally agree with you if he was going against another young, but trained Force user, but he wasn't. He was going against people that had literally never held a lightsaber before that day.

Heh you know, now that I think about it, I can't really defend that 1000 year old alien telling him "You HAVE a weapon!" when he asks for a regular blaster. XD

Fuck yeah, it was great. I was so gods damned happy to get a GOOD Star Wars movie after that trainwreck of a prequel trilogy.
