When someone in Normals says to go learn your new champ in Bots...

So you say K and go play bots. But as you're learning your new mid lane champ your top and bottom lanes push to the nexus in 10 minutes and your mid-lane opponent is nowhere to be seen because his programming forces him to go defend nexus. Yeah fuck bots. Playing Normals.

Bots can teach you a couple nice things.

  1. Ability combos. Is it QEW or QWE? Or is it WEQ for more damage? What flows better?
  2. First clear jungling. Bots don't invade, don't counterjungle, and duo top providing you a great gank opportunity when they push the lane.
  3. Sustain. Does this champion have to worry about mana? How badly? Can you sustain your HP against bot harass? If not, then you'll never sustain against real opponents.
  4. Early buy items. What should you rush? What first buy is best for the champion? Do you prefer damage or sustain?
  5. You can actually read your ability descriptions in game. Some of those things are a paragraph long or more. Oh, the Q also has an attack speed slow? Never knew that. Oh, the slow gets better with level and scales with AP? Neat.

These are basic, but important, things you should know about your champ before you try to play against real players. Even just watching a youtube vid of a high level player playing the champ and then trying to mimic their mechanics in a bot game is enough. Normals are for practicing for ranked, true, but you should at least have a basic level of competence with a champion. It's a courtesy to your teammates.

Bots don't teach you how to play a champion. They teach you the basics of how a champions kit works. Like "I'm Ezreal, my Q is a skillshot auto attack that can't crit!"

Honestly, bots just teach bad habits, although they are great stress relief just from being able to hit full build by like 15 minutes in.

Sarutobi1/4/2016, 9:15:51 AM9 votes

I really only suggest this for people who have no idea how to play. If you keep using the excuse that you are new to a champion and are like 0-10 it would be obvious that you have no clue how the champ works in any sense. So it would be wise to learn via bots. If you have some general understanding of the champion then you are just playing terribly and need to get good!

Earthlord Jazz1/4/2016, 7:07:20 AM7 votes

A custom game with bots all on intermediate would probably be better if you're complaining about others roflstomping the AI

Rendarkan1/4/2016, 9:37:15 AM5 votes

I just use bots for mechanic testing and such. Other than that its for a quick IP first win of the day. Sometimes we purposely feed the bots just to see what happens. Side note: Don't feed the Taric, Morgana, or Galio.

SociopathFriend1/4/2016, 11:01:01 PM4 votes

It's not so much "play bots" for me so much as "At least know what your abilities do". I don't care how you learn that- playing bots playing custom reading the wiki watching a video hell- sitting there in the client and read the champion bio while being shown descriptions of their abilities ANY of these will do. But don't jump into a 5v5 match (where everyone wants to win) with a champion you know nothing about and then be upset when people tell you off for making them lose because you don't know the champion.

Gubaguy1/4/2016, 6:58:58 AM3 votes

Or you auto win because its bots and they have the IQ level of a dead rock. Seriously, you can build AP quin and still be 7 levels over the bots withint 4 minutes of game because of how stupid they are.

Salidfingers1/4/2016, 6:14:05 PM3 votes

Do what I do, learn in ranks. Can't learn to swim with out jumping in.

Kikirino1/4/2016, 9:57:18 PM2 votes

My friends and I rush mid in an attempt to beat bots faster and faster. I think our fastest game was 13 minutes. There are only four of us so there is always one random and we tell them what we are doing before hand and they are always down for it. Bots is not a place for practice. Bots are made to be steamrolled. Until Riot makes a new tier of difficulty in bots that makes them at least Silver in skill level you are better off in normals.

Starfish H1/4/2016, 3:49:54 PM2 votes

I once fed a Brand bot.

I wasn't doing it on purpose

It's not about situational experience, they're saying you need to familiarize yourself with the champ, learn their kit and mechanics.

ElJanitorFrank1/5/2016, 1:56:36 AM2 votes

Uh...when I say that I mean a 9 bot squad game.

You can 1 v 1 the mid laner to get your mechanics straight, that is the only reason people say play bots. So you aren't sitting there in base trying to figure out which skill you should get first, and which skill to max, what to build, etc.

Playing a bots (custom with 9 bots) can give you a general idea of how you're gonna play, that's all people in normals ask.

Normals might not be as competitive as ranked, but normals players expect you to know what your fucking Q does before you queue up.

I used to love co-op vs ai mode for testing out new jungle runes for clear speed optimizations and early dragons (since they level up based on the levels of all champs in the game). Was also nice for getting a rough estimate of early gank damage. Now the bots don't even have keystones and games don't last long enough to experiment and find the I-can-solo-baron builds in a somewhat realistic setting.

junkgummybum1/4/2016, 10:48:24 PM1 votes

Play custom treeline game with your champ vs ai(your champ)..Unless Riot didn't make an ai for that champ. Then you watch youtube and compare your play vs ai treeline bots selecting tryhardy champs.

Tryhard Mittens1/4/2016, 7:40:34 PM1 votes

Buy sad robot amumu and spam laugh.

If I feel like playing a bot, I go into a custom. Bot games in general are stupid, but you can at least control the teams in a custom.

ahferroin71/5/2016, 5:59:37 PM1 votes

So go do custom games.

The big complaint is about people who play a champ first time in Normals (or even ranked), and have absolutely no idea how to play them. I don't care if it's your first time, if you actually understand the combos and the build requirements and how to not die as that champ.

Lintu Puck1/5/2016, 1:53:38 AM1 votes

bots a mainly for getting a gist of basic mechanics and helping you remember what spells do. that way you don't end up in a pvp match going "wait my abilities do that?"

Ternt1/5/2016, 7:33:07 PM1 votes

I had to do this for Zed. I tried him in normals and hardly got to really test him since I got so destroyed. I went to bots to really understand his kit and how to execute combos. Went back to normals, then finally played him a few times in ranked with no issue. I think bots is nice to learn a kit, normals are nice to practice your skills, and ranked is a test of your skills overall. I also use custom bot games to practice jungle clears on champions that I am trying out. Use 5vbots to learn how to gank on the champ. Although it isn't going to be perfect, it does help with understanding certain aspects of the game.

EDIT: I also use custom games to learn how to CS on champs, since some are very different than others.

As long as you learn your new champ in Normals and not in Ranked, we cool.

Steel Blossom1/5/2016, 6:08:48 AM1 votes

I thought people tried new champs in customs....because that's what I do....maybe I can't demand the whole playerbase to be as considerate as me, I guess.

Maximum Morde1/5/2016, 3:09:04 PM1 votes

Agreed. Bots are so damn terrible they aren't even worth trying. You can do anything you want and still win without trying. When I first get a new champ that I have never played before, I go to a custom match to test abilities for like 5-10 minutes then just leave it and go play normals.

Malicious Fury1/5/2016, 5:04:44 PM1 votes

Holy crap I came back from work to find 35 comments. GUess this is a touchy subject.

FistOfSharkiesha1/4/2016, 7:58:25 PM1 votes

They need to shift a top lane bot to jungle and have them roam but also be less strict in how they change lanes. It's meant to be practice for pvp but it's just 2-3 people per game getting 30+ kills and ending in 15 minutes while the newbies don't even have an enemy in their lane.

TouchpadExpert1/4/2016, 9:55:31 PM1 votes

There's no IP gains in a custom game. Just want to point that one out.
