...take into consideration that they can not hear or see you to help determine if you are making a lighthearted joke or being sarcastic, or actually trying to insult them. Body language and audial cues are important in determining the meaning behind words, and can't be translated properly over a chat message so those words can often be misinterpreted. "Good job" can be either "Way to throw, idiot" or "Nice play man!". If someone mistakes your message and gets offended, don't get offended and insult them for it, try to understand how it was misinterpreted and reword it.
