How long have you been playing and why do you keep playing?

GalacticBears·6/26/2017, 7:24:29 AM·8 votes·2,025 views

This is just out of curiosity, because I know I'm a super old League player, but I'm finding most people I see now don't even know about the time before seasons XD

So just out of curiosity comment how long you've been playing.

I've been an on and off League player since 2010.

I've broken all the rules X) smurfed and what not. Once hit diamond on an alt account, but I was admittedly the WORST kind of league player (toxic, only played my champ in my lane, dodged, ect.) I hated it and left for awhile afterwards. Since then I've come back because I just love the competition. I'm addicted to it.

So what about you? When did you start and what keeps you playing?

I've been playing since about late Season 3 or early Season 4. I keep playing simply because there isn't anything else like it out there.

DotA 2, as much more competitive and balanced it tends to be, is a really dry game that lacks personality. It's also a very old-feeling game, with a lot of the mechanics feeling like its DotA 1 ancestor. It's a lot slower and games drag out a bit too long for my patience.

Heroes of the Storm is a fun, but overall too casual for me to take seriously or invest too much time in. Fun as it is, I see it more as something like popcorn chicken to League's chicken breast: the same thing as its core level, but used in different ways. HotS is small and snacky; fun to eat while you have it, but not really memorable enough to stick with you. League is larger and more akin to a full meal; potentially the tastiest thing you've ever eaten or perhaps it's not even fit for pig slop, but you'll still probably remember it regardless.

SMITE is...I dunno, it exists, but no force on Earth is going to make me take 5v5 SMITE seriously. 3v3 Joust is where it's at there.

League stands head-and-shoulders above other MOBAs for being so laden with personality and character. Its imperfections are almost characteristic rather than annoying.

Started early into season 4.

What keeps me playing? The constant will to get to mid plat- low diamond for now which gets destroyed each time I hit gold 5.

Maybe this year's different. Don't want to deal with mid-silver again.

since season 1, but i rarely play. truth be told im a console gamer and not having the option to use a controller for this game really bums me out. carpal tunnel is no joke.

plus the scene is way too competitive for what this game is. from time to time i jump on to see what's new, but that's about it.

i LOVE the characters though. they feel way more fleshed out than say for instance... smites gods or overwatchs heroes. even though that may not be true. plus the art style is very familiar feeling and has the right aesthetics for my taste.

Been playing since mid season 5. Started off playing nothing but Sona support for the rest of the season and didn't start playing other champs till later. I dropped her completely as soon as she got reworked alongside Leona.

Only played ranked once last season to see where I'd place.

Keep playing because I want to improve I suppose? I'm inspired to be a better player by the pros and the people I've seen on the rift so I want to learn each role to some degree and use that knowledge to improve.

I started playing in season 2, it was varus who just got released and Darius was when I got hooked (or maybe that's the other way around) I watched TPA take the world championships that year in a basement with a bunch of my friends, that's when I fell in love with esports

I keep playing it because no other game strikes a balance like league does, I like the micro mechanics but hate shooters and I'm trash at fighting games, I love the strategy and tactical play but hate RTS games, I love farming but I hate the grinding of mmo's league has a bit of every game mechanic but none of it gets done to ad naseum- For me at least

Started some point in season 3, kinda fuzzy on when exactly. Learning the game was not really fun but stuck with it because i loved the characters in all their glory. Also playing with a friend really helped( the person who introduced me to LoL). After jumping from champ to champ trying to find the right one for me i found Malzahar, who i proceeded love very dearly. I played him in the majority of my game, with a few others here and there that were fun in some ways but never as good as Malz. I played a lot during this time. Then came the horrible scourge on LoL, the much dreaded but hoped would be good, MYMU. I went into that hopeful that they would keep the fun parts, and if they had to prune something they would remove his ult and put something new in. I could stand that. What I got instead was a gutted mess with so much focus on his minions ( F.W.I. I didnt play him for some minionmance appeal but for his E and his W and Q in lesser extent. Wont go into all the details on why i liked what i liked unless asked) that his spells felt like crap to use, and his laning felt like it relied so hard on how smart or how bad your opponent was. Were they good and killed the minions fast? Then you felt useless. Were they bad and left them alive, then "they" did so much damage that it was ridiculous.

When these dark times were here, i left LoL for the most part, just coming back for a odd game here or there to see if i could find another champ i could love as much as I loved Malz. I never had any luck with this. Then, one day when checking the patch notes to see if they had done anything interesting, i saw some potential light! Malz, the spell caster part of him received some love. I was hopeful, but once burned you do not forget it, so i checked it out with a hope of better things. All can say is with the experience, Malz feels back to me, not as much of a minionmancer( though its still there, just not as prevalent.) but as a spell slinging mage, slowly destroying minds, not with elemental damage, but with visions so horrible that their minds can not handle it! I have been happily playing malz again! Though i like other champs, as long as malz is the fun exciting champ he is, i will be around.

Started at the end of Season 2. I like the game, so i keep playing it.

Wet Dryman6/26/2017, 8:31:57 AM2 votes

Started in Novemeber 2011 two weeks before Volibear release. Played most of my games in season 2 and 3. Later kept playing but there were long episodes of breaks from playing.

What keeps me playing is some champions: Gragas, Karthus, Shaco, Singed, GP that are really fun to play as and are unique across all MOBAs, feeling resembling nostalgia and my old and weak graphic card that stops me from playing new games.

Season 3 No life and no other similar games. Season 3 wasn't good but it was getting better and better until early season 5 I think. Now they've just been replacing shit with different shit in terms of balance.

Talibananascorch6/26/2017, 6:00:19 PM1 votes

Since Season 5 right before Ekko's release and I just play it since it's free and basically a meme at this point

ChaosThief6/26/2017, 7:04:25 PM1 votes

Not sure the season exactly. I played when Fiora was released. You know, the old one which was just "press R to win", the pre-rework one.

I play mostly to just try and have fun with different strategies. Take the support mid lane or top lane, use an off build off a few scalings, etc etc, occasionally to play the raid boss champion and try to take on as many as I can before dying.

So yeah. It's fun when the game isn't surrendered at 15 minutes and people dropping left and right over a single kill.

Forhonor3216/26/2017, 7:15:15 PM1 votes

I can't exactly remember when I officially started season-wise but I do remember first getting on back when Spirit Guard Udyr was the loading screen (so late season 4 i think?)

As to why I keep playing, I think it comes down to these reasons:

  1. It was my first MOBA ever - My friend told me about it back when i was a sophomore in high school while in marching band, so I tried it out on my mac at the time and was hooked. It was nothing like I've ever played before in terms of gameplay. ( I did upgrade to PC btw)
  2. The champions I play are fun - I've dabbled in other MOBA's here and there like HotS, Dota 2, and more recently Paragon, but none of the characters there are quite satisfying to play as they are in League. I prefer playing Darius and getting the sweet proc of my 5 stack passive or ult than playing Dota's Axe and wait for my E to go off and wait for the kill shot of my ult. There's just something about these champs that stick with me that the other games can't seem to get a hold of.
  3. I think I've just been programmed to - I've been playing League for almost or now 3 years. Most of my other friends have quit playing outside of yearly Esports event and I just end up playing by myself, simply because I've played the game for so long I don't exactly know how to quit it and I don't have many other games to go off of. I know I just said I dabble in games like Dota and Paragon but I don't ever find them as enjoying as League and I think that's actually a problem. It also doesn't help that I don't have a TV set up for my Xbox so I can't hop on that and play some Halo or Shadow's of Mordor. I've just been playing League for so long that I don't know how to quit it pretty much.
  4. FInally, it's mostly for the lore - While I have fun playing certain champs I don't have fun playing against certain champs or even playing the game now since it's so snowbally and how toxic or trollish players can be. But with the lore of League it's got me hooked. I love the backgrounds of some of these champs. I love the short stories Riot comes out with. I love the world they set up. This is mostly why I stick around. Not really for gameplay but because I really prefer the world they've created for their game that most MOBA's don't really do (or they do but don't give enough/do it very poorly)
Teiho6/26/2017, 7:51:53 PM1 votes

Started playing near the same time as you. I joined at the tail end of I guess S1? Idk, all I remember was watching the first world championships and getting hooked which was lucky for me since the game I had been no lifing previously was going to shit. I honestly don't know what keeps me playing aside from the fact that it's something to kill time with, where else am I going to find a game that I can sink perfect little 20-50 minute segments of my life into? I can't do it on Cities or Civ because I'd end up sinking upwards of 20 hours, and I can't do it on fighting games or shooters because those rarely last more than 30 minutes. Other MOBA's are pretty meh too me since they don't have the same charm or challenge that accompanies learning the mechanics and interactions and single player games are depressing if you keep playing them for too long. So yeah I'm pretty much stuck with league.

It also doesn't help that the yearly worlds songs are god awefully catchy >_> Warriors tears me up every time man, every time.

Aside from that when I literally first started I mained Ashe/Annie/Teemo. Over the years I kept up with those three until I dropped Teemo by the end of S3, Annie by S5 and Ashe at the start of this season. Haven't figured who I'd main yet but Kalista is pretty fun so who knows if i'll continue to sink time into her by the end.

Haven't broken many rules, and sure i've flamed a few people but hey that's part of the culture at this point. If you haven't flamed someone then you're the one getting flamed.

But yeh das me.

Sraeg20136/26/2017, 8:15:34 PM1 votes

I started at the end of Nami patch about 2-3 days before Vi came out, so mid-December 2012 - preseason 3. Still remember how Gragas and Nautilus were in rotation back then. For the next 3 years I became a religious League player. At that point it turned into a more hate-than-love relationship and in the past 3 months I played maybe 4 matches. I can't even tell how much passed since the last one, because OP.GG only tracks them so far.

To answer the second part: I do not play the game anymore. Sad, but playing League was so fucking depressing ever since Season 6, I had to consider my mental health.

I do like to check this steaming pile of profanity of a sorry excuse for official game forum to see how much more miserable the game is becoming nearly every change. Except not being a part of it anymore, I feel relief and can laugh at it.

Send nudes help.

Hello I am Bird6/26/2017, 9:47:54 PM1 votes

Started in spring of 2014, when Braum was released. I used to keep playing because it was fun and I had a bunch of friends to play it with So I spent money on skins and shit Now all my friends abandoned League and I'm still here, afraid to leave this game because of all the money I've spent on it. The game is still fun but... eh.

SorryForYourLoss6/27/2017, 3:35:20 AM1 votes

I started in August of 2016. Late season 6 I believe. Technically I played my first game at my ex girlfriends place a few years back when the map was all dark and shit was hard to see. Maybe it was her shit computer. Who knows. But I REALLY started playing in 2016.

I've been toxic, dealt with toxicity, and reformed all in this little time, as well as found my main and my main lane.

The reason I keep playing? Not because I truly love this game. Or even because I like gaming. I keep playing League because I suffer from Borderline Personality Disorder and PTSD so since I was young online gaming was really the only way I could be social and feel "normal". I've made friends on League, and those friends matter to me a damn good bit now. League in a way is my version of going to the mall or bar to meet people. Yeah, it's lame as fuck and maybe I'm lame. But I can't be social like most people.

I play league to hang out and be social. Not to try hard for diamond, or to give a fuck what any flamer has to say. I want to laugh, occasionally play ranked, and at the end of the day, feel like I connected with people.

since the end of season 3, and I only keep playing because of 2 reasons -

  1. I spent so much money on this game
  2. My friends only play this game

I started playing in season 5, before Bard's release. I was looking for a new game to play, LoL is free, gave it a shot. To be honest, i don't really know what keeps me playing. I guess it's a bunch of little things. No other game offers the same challenge. The learning curve was pretty steep but once i got over it, i was addicted.

tail end of S5, inbetween tahm kench and kindred releases is when i started. i keep playing cuz its what most of my friends are playing, also theres plenty of champs to play so i dont get bored with playing the same few over and over again.

ananke6/26/2017, 7:47:51 AM1 votes

i've been playing since the beginning of this season and i honestly have no idea why i keep playing, the toxicity and general stupidity is exhausting and (i know yall are going to whine at me about having thin skin and whatnot) but i have ended up almost crying after matches before. this isn't even ranked, i just played my placements to see where i'd be placed and a couple others and that's it.

OurLestrade6/26/2017, 8:02:57 AM1 votes

Early 2013, while I've always read and watched LOL my playtime is pretty low (And 90% bot games for my bonus) because of school then and now uni. Most of the time I theorycraft and read into lore. Why do I still play? Eh, this year's probably been the most boring year for me so far since nothing that really grabs me has happened yet. I suppose I still play because I've played constantly for so long, I tend to drift from game to game usually.

Krigjer6/26/2017, 8:19:46 AM1 votes

Since 2012.

After Zyra's release but before Diana's release. I remember the login screens fondly.

I keep playing because I like the skirmish/arena playstyle. I like working with my teammates towards victory. I also don't have the time to devote to MMOs or RPGs like I would want to (I used to play WoW ... addictively.) I work two jobs now so I sometimes only have an hour or two a day to myself. That's enough for a game or two of League, so it works.

DaNinad6/26/2017, 3:32:38 PM1 votes

I've been playing since november lol, a brand new league player. I like this game because things are always changing, theres 130 something champions to play, and theres different metas. I'm just never bored of it

LeeSin Carefully6/26/2017, 3:33:42 PM1 votes

I have Played for like 5 years , i quit this year because league sucks. everyone is toxic and even my behaviour changed irl because i had been infected with toxicity. [slayer-pantheon-thumbs] 10/10 would ruin my behaviour again

SuchSwagSuchweed6/26/2017, 4:57:22 PM1 votes

I've started playing around the end of season 3 with my cousin. We've been playing ever since then, League was the best game we ever played. We had so much fun playing the game. Even though we had chat restriction most of the time because we're too toxic, we had fun. I don't play league any more because everyone I know quit the game or just move on with life. I met so many cool people on here, every day after school ended I would rush home t login and play with people I met. When ever I see my friends list it makes me so sad to see everyone I know just go offline one day and not say a word about it. It's like they just vanished tbh. I don't see any point in playing league any more if everyone I know moved on or just quit playing.

TheSequelsRBad6/26/2017, 5:03:11 PM1 votes

Since late season 1 if I recall.

I keep playing because I like the game. I don't play it as much as I used to tho.

MOBAs are like alcoholic drinks, league is like beer. it tastes like shit, is made from shit, makes people vulgar, some are addicted, but everybody drinks it.
