How exactly are assists recorded?

I mean you don't get assists for things like janna passive (old version) but it seems like you get assists if you shield someone who gets an assist even if they don't do anything after you shield them...so do you get the assist for helping someone who was part of the kill and it just like, carries to you despite you never actually helping the enemy die?

Janna shields Lulu, Lulu shields Karma, Karma Shields Gangplank, Gangplank buffs Jinx, Jinx 1v1's an enemy for the kill. All of them get an Assist point for helping Jinx indirectly :3

Use this to your advantage to pick up assists that are too far for you to actually participate in. I always buff someone that is Teleporting in case they get a kill soon after. Buffing a Karthus as he ults means all of the enemy is tagged to grant you an assist :P

You get an assist if you do any damage to the person who died or cast any kind of buff or on anyone who got credit for the assist or kill.

This can be very helpful for things like gangplanks e or warwicks howl.
