I was under the impression that your rank would reset with the preseason and that you'd have to play your placements again. Is this not the case, or does this not happen until the actual new season rolls around?

Only happens when the new Season actually roles out.

Reset isn't until the new season starts. This is still technically season 5; the patch numbers say what season it is
