You're missing what he is saying. On the Yi in question it does work, because it would directly counter Thornmail by increasing Yi's lifesteal returns and reducing the damage of thornmail.

For those many dozens of you at home: Thornmail does magic damage and this damage is reduced by MR.

What he's saying is that YI builds a Spirit visage and you can't kill him with Thornmail anymore.

All Yi needs for damage is item 3153 item 3931 item 3142 and then he can get item 3110 and item 3065 and be stupid tanky while dealing a crapton of damage. That's the reason Yi is so strong with Devourer, he doesn't need to build full damage anymore.

Before, he had to build glass cannon in order to be effective late game. Sated Devourer's strength in his kit is that now he doesn't need 5 offensive items, he only needs AS and some on-hit effects (the crit from PD is just a bonus), freeing him up to be tanky yet still deal ludicrous damage. It allows him and champs like Shyvana to get away with otherwise mediocrely half DPS builds effectively and then become very hard to kill.

You need to reduce his attack speed, so taking items like Frozen heart or Randuin's and champs like Malphite, Nunu, or Nasus are the way to beat him.
