Help: Tips on when to get Thornmail

Note: I am playing ARAM mostly atm.

So whenever I get thornmail in ARAM. It seems like I never hurt an AD AA champion (mostly adc's, but sometimes Yasuo) with Thornmail. On Alistar for example, I'll have Sunfire + Frozen Heart + Thornmail and they'll have... like Bloodthirster and the returned damage doesn't feel like it does anything. I'll die and if being kited so I can't hit them. They still have a blood thirster shield on them. Some have Warlord's and some do not. Should I even waste my money on a Thornmail anymore?

EDIT: I only really look at where I'm trying to 1v1 an ADC (not necessarily Alistar). Not when it's me vs a few. Like i'll always live for a while, but they don't seem to even notice the Thornmail.

Thornmail is primarily used to ensure that the enemies cannot lifesteal through your damage; it won't kill them alone, but it will mitigate their sustain.

Thornmail need serious help even where item 3124 has a phantom hit that procs on hit effects thorn mails and Ramus' W are on hit effects but dont seem to get proced by the phantom hit while you still take damage from it.
