More IP. New Player Experience. My proposal.

My younger brother just started playing. He used to watch me play a lot, so one day I started teaching him to play. Which got me thinking- How can we, you, they, help new players learn the game, enjoy it, unlock more of it?

How about... Giving players free IP when they level up? Not a lot, maybe 500, just so they can reach 30 with a feeling of "huh. I got a lot of IP. maybe I should buy some new champions".

We can give them an option to choose a free champion every 3 or so levels. We can give them Mystery Gifts. We can give them some sort of a progression feeling.

What do you guys think?

Hi, I'm newish myself (level 15).

I don't find the IP to be that horrible. I already have two 4800 champions, a 3150 champion, and a fewer lower level champions. I also have over 6k IP saved up for the upcoming rune sale. If I could make two changes it would be:

1 - Instead of 400 free RP, give us one free champion at a later level. Or stagger it. Give a 450 or 1350 at level 4, then at level 10 give a 3150 or 4800 champion.

2 - The upcoming fixes to T1 and T2 runes are very nice, but I think T3 - at least the 'generic' - runes should have a lower cost to allow people to more easily transition into them. Perhaps put the common AD/AP reds, armor yellows, MR blues at a highly reduced cost to allow people to get two starter pages going without having to drop soooo much for them.

Having only 3 somewhat expensive champions isn't a good enough pool. Notice how you're level 15 and only have three. That's a problem. Once you get to 30, you'll only have like give or take 8-9. Do you not see the problem? You'll have like literally no runes if you get 8 champions by 30 (which is when you play ranked) If you decide to buy runes instead, you'll only have like 4 champions (3.1k-630k ip price range)

Well, I had no plans to go straight into ranked after hitting 30. I wanted to get 50+ wins after hitting 30, to the point where I felt like my skill level was good enough, and then do ranked. Just rushing in after 30 seemed like a recipe for Bronze 5, and I have watched Salty Teemo, I want no part of that place.

I also think keeping my champion pool lower as I don't want to spread out my...whatever you want to call it, training, experience...across such a large pool and instead have a good core in a few lanes for ranked. Plus, when the sale hits, I'll be able to have two T3 rune pages. W/o the sale, I'd probably be 2k off if I bought them within a week, instead of at 20 when I can use them. But that still will give me about 13 more levels of IP for more champions if I want, or to spread out rune options.

I could be wrong here. But I feel pretty solid in my plan.

Isnt there still a level cap on tier 3's?

Yes, but I have to buy them now (when the sale hits) to take advantage of the 33% off, instead of in five more levels when I'd normally get them. I might have just worded it poorly, I'm running on next to no sleep today and can't nap, otherwise sleep schedule = ruined.

This seems like it might be just a bit of an exaggeration. I'm currently level 25 with two "full" (for my level) pages and thirteen champions. I've played a lot of bot games, which might screw it up, but I would have figured that bots would give lower IP per XP. I get that not everybody's experience with IP is the same, but "only 8 champs and no runes when you hit 30" just feels a bit out there, to me.

If i remember correctly though, you cant play any other modes when trying new champs. I find dominion and aram to be very good practicing arenas when trying out new champs due to the toxicity of the community when you try to practice in rift, esp when you hit level 30. Once you hit level 30, the other team members have a horrible attitude if you do bad or not well enough to their standards. Plus, i found when i first hit level 30, i was getting matched with players who were in silver and gold, sometimes even plat, and they would beat me down for doing bad when i was just learning the mechanics of a certain champ. Even now, i still need practice with champs that I'm rusty with or the new champs i have bought. I always find aram and dominion to be good maps to play on when practicing. People tend to take these modes a lot less seriously than on rift. And since these modes require a certain number of champs to be owned before you can play, the lower levels are at a certain disadvantage in regards to practice, esp when there are so many smurfs out there on rift that make it tough on new players to learn how to play.

A bit of bonus IP isn't a bad idea, but gifting them free champions and Mystery gifts might be, if you do it too often. Besides, you can already get Garen , Tristana and Alistar for free just by liking Riot on Facebook and such.

I totally agree with a few IP boosts as a little reward, though.

But please, if you comment and say its a good idea, upvote it, otherwise no one sees it and it just disappears.

EDIT: Ok, I know it sounds greedy, but it wasn't my intention.

It's a free game and thus you can create as many new accounts as you like. It could easily be abused, unless i'm just not awake and thinking right so correct me if i'm wrong.

Good, idea though :)

How will you abuse bonus IP? Buy more champions? Buy more runes?

Being lvl30 and only having "8-9" champs is NOT an issue.

Why does everyone see a problem with having to play a lot in order to get a bigger champ pool?

I'd rather have newer players grind normals for year in the process of getting enough champs for ranked (i.e. to fill any role), and actually learn how to play. Instead of just "Oh. You're level 30. Go straight to ranked now. You clearly know what you're doing."

The thing is, you're not gonna find the champion for each role that you most importantly LIKE, and can actually play to a good degree Some champions are just not the type for people. Like for me, playing Ashe or Varus or thresh or riven, just isn't going to work out because i don't like their playstyle, which will make me bored and play terribly. So if you spend 6.3k ip on a champion , and then find out that you don't like them at all, there goes your whole week-2weeks of grinding for ip.

  1. Free rotation is for exactly that purpose.
  2. Refunds. (Or not; can't remember if you can refund IP.)

Still, it happens to everyone. I don't play 90% of my champs.

You can refund IP purchases, yes. (Whether you should be able to is another question entirely.)

This I agree on completely. I wish LoL had a sort of 'Rent-A-Champion' option, to unlock them for one day and try before you buy.

I know they have the free rotation, but for someone like myself who has only had a small smattering of the rotations, I'd really like to try out more of the champions in the game.

I think IP per level would be a good bonus. I think it might be nice to gift people with an IP/EXP boost every 5 levels(4 game or something)... and at max level gift people 1 free random skin for the champ they played most while leveling up as a 'reward' for hitting 30.

I wish they had that when I started last year, it would have been a huge help to getting a champion base and some good runes.

Bet you that Riot wont do it because "it will be abused by botters"

450 ip , 1 free champ that is 3150 ip or lower till level 10 , so 1 ,5, 10 lvl . /// 500ip, 1 free champ that is 4800 ip or lower till lvl 20. 15,20 /////// 600 ip , 2 free champs that are 6300 at lvl, 25 ,30.
