Why is normal mmr different from ranked?

My normal mmr is somehow with plats/diamonds, yet I'm a low gold player. How the F am I supposed to try new things without doing them in ranked?

It makes sense that they are separate. Many people treat normals and ranked very different. I do think they need some mechanism to catch your MMR up when your normal MMR lags behind your ranked MMR. Which is pretty common for people who mostly only play ranked.
Basically we need some kind of modifier for so like for every 100 MMR your ranked is over your normal you gain +50% MMR in normals. Or maybe even simpler right before the ranked reset happens replace your normal MMR with the average of your normal and ranked MMRs. But there are problems with trying to close the gap. If people play completely different in normals like say in ranked they always play their best role with like their top 3 champs and want to play different champs and roles in ranked they are going to have an extremely hard time. Which I think is the reason there is no connection between the 2.
I'd love for a rioter to explain why normal and ranked mmr are different. So fucking stupid.

I kind of enjoy it. It helps me get friend requested by Plats when I am only Gold.
Because they're two different game modes. Just like ARAM and Ranked MMR are different.
Your MMR isn't plat. Their MMR is gold lol. I agree, though. I hate seeing bronze against plat in norms. Makes it unfun to play someone that much higher.

oh so you're saying their normal MMR is lower...damn :( Guess that could make sense then. Nevertheless I don't see why they wouldn't be the same.
plat/diamonds playing against silver/gold in normals is kinda dumb.
