That's a good question, but it's hard to say since you don't already know where you stand. IMO it's best to just start playing now. There's no better practice for ranked matches... than just playing ranked matches. Just make sure to take your placements seriously, be familiar with how pick/ban phase works, practice with your champion pool, and enjoy it.

So as someone who has never done ranked before and who is waiting until after the upcoming rune page and runes sale to start ranked (to rid myself of disadvantages as much as possible), should I actually wait a lot longer to start ranked?
My thought being, after the reset my "league average" MMR will be a lot closer to players that are way above average skill level, and I'll get more difficult placement matches. If I wait a few weeks after the season starts, I'll (hopefully) get placed with only the average skilled players and will likely win more matches and get a better placement?
Or, if Bronze and Silver are really as riddled with trolls and luck-based (which team is the troll on) as people tend to claim they are, am I better off playing right away and hoping to get matched with better players in my placements so as to avoid trolls?
I'm also curious what happens when you dodge while in a placement match? Is it counted as a loss (the same as a promotional match), or is it just a time penalty (the same as a normal match) since dodging a ranked match is only supposed to cost a few LP but doesn't lower your MMR (which is all that placements look at).

I have a question; so I'm pretty solidly in silver atm; I checked my OPGG and it said my MMR is at 1134 and that the average for my league is 1104, and that I have basically normal MMR. According to your article, though, I should be closer to like 1350 or something; is this just an inaccuracy from estimates (due to the incomplete data that OPGG has), or am I getting placed in Plastic 2 next season?
OP.GG takes the average of your specific league (Alistar's Giants) which might be lower than some other leagues (ex: Sejuani's Warlords). I used a few different leagues for each level, but it still may vary by 100 points or so if your league is specifically higher or lower than the averaged leagues I used.
Hmmm, are you quite sure about your table? Because as far as i know, the first 5 games weigh heavier than the next 5. My experience from last season: I ended Season 3 as a Silver 1. I dropped to Silver 4 during pre-season. During placements, i lost my first four games but ended up with an overall score of 5/5. I was placed into Bronze 2.

I updated the MMR values to be more accurate. Master tier was introduced just before I made this table, and it changed the average MMR of each league pretty significantly. Also I was a little off on some of the lower leagues because of small data sets, sorry for the silver discrimination.
