My League of Legends Experience
About a year ago, a few of my friends introduced me to LoL. I had very little experience with the MOBA genre at that point. During my time with league, I feel I've learnt a lot about the game and why it has a lot of negative stigma surrounding it. I'm going to be focusing on two major aspects of the game: The Community and The Meta because (and I'm not going to sugar coat anything here) they are what make me absolutely hate this game with a burning passion.
First off, the community. There is no way around it, this is hands down, the most toxic, idiotic and ignorant community I have ever seen. People harass you for every mistake you make and every question you ask. In a game where communication and teamwork is the main focus, it's pretty freaking sad when muting your whole team so you don't have to put up with them leads to the most enjoyable experience.
Next, the meta. It's inevitable, every game with a competitive scene has a Meta of some sort, however what league lacks is a way to make sure that the meta isn't too oppressive, For example, competitive Pokémon have matches and even tournaments that restrict which kinds of Pokémon you can use to certain tier, meaning even weaker Mons can be useful in the competitive scene, or how World of Warcraft's smaller class roster allows the balance team to make sure every class is viable (Although that may not be the case anymore, as I quit WoW a long time ago). League on the other hand has no competitive games or tournaments that restrict which champions can be played to lower tiers and its champion roster is far to large for every champion to be viable. And this leads to the competitive scene being extremely FotM based. I've watched the LCS, and it follows the same predictable pattern:
Champions A, B and C get picked/banned every single game, eventually Champions A, B and C get nerfed, while at the same time, Champions D, E and F become picked/banned every single game due to a variety of factors (They get Buffed/Reworked, There is a shift in the meta that makes said champs favorable, etc.) Rinse and repeat. This leads to an overwhelming majority of champs being completely ignored in competitive play. Riot perpetuates this FotM meta, by, instead of giving already existing champs some much needed attention, making new champs that in most cases are completely broken (
)
So here is my final verdict: This is a game that, through a combination of a terrible playerbase and complete negligence on Riot's part to fix champions that desperately need fixing, has been made absolutely terrible. I can see what might have been a really good game at one point, if League ever was like that, it is now nothing but a shell of its former self and judging by what I've seen people say here on the boards, the game is starting to die off, whether it's people going to other MOBAs, or people are just starting to lose interest, it is clear that this game is no longer the shining beacon of the MOBA genre that it used to be.
TL; DR version: I really don't like this game because the community sucks and the meta is too oppressive, if the game was good at one point, it clearly isn't anymore.
