Why Is Sion So Popular Right Now?
I don't understand honestly. It seems like so many other champions can do his job better.

Because Sion is freaking terrifying to play against. Massively telegraphed abilities can actually be an advantage, because it puts huge pressure on his enemies to dodge them, so they pay less attention to his allies.
^ and his minion harass with e maxed isn't something to be laughed at.
His kit is ridiculously strong, he's a tank, has more than enough CC, has a massive area on Q and a long stretch on E that you're forced to dodge or get hit and bursted down. That means you're paying more attention to his spells than his carries'.
On top of everything else mentioned, the passive on his shield makes him have a ridiculous amount of health late game, making both his shield and the armor he buys much more effective.
