My dad on going AFK

I'm playing a normal game late at night on a Saturday while my father comes in and suddenly my game just suddenly disconnects.

He tells me he has turned off the router and that I'm wasting my life on this game. I tell him the whole "not every game is pausible" speech and I also tell him I've let down at least four others.

At this point I'm extremely guilty so he responds by saying the following sentences: They're a bunch of losers. Let them waste their life on that stupid game.

So now I'm wallowing in guilt and anger while typing this up.

So the thing is, I know that going AFK is wrong and I hate doing it, but at the end of the day, it's just a game. I know the community hates AFKs with a burning passion, but why do we care so much if everything we commit to in this game accounts for almost nothing?

Sorry for sounding a bit salty.

Games are for entertainment. If all you do is entertain yourself, then yes it's a waste. There is nothing wrong with having a hobby, but there's a limit.

In the end, just listen to your parents. You can still have a job/go to school and have free time.

Why do you play a game at all? It ruins an experiance of the game and wastes time for those people when you AFK. If you feel it isn't that much then go AFK i honestly usually don't care unles its ranked. if it is ranked don't play ranked again if you have this view.

Its one thing to waste your life. That equates to a net zero effect on the universe.

What he's doing, telling other people how to live their lives, is worse.

Very easy to see where he is coming from. Especially coming from a generation where technology and entertainment were equal to going outside, seeing someone spend their time on a computer for hours on end can definitely seem wasteful to someone. It also doesn't help when you have bad grades or don't do anything else, and in that case I would agree with him.

Then again, if you play like, once or twice a day, you can make the valid excuse that it isn't really wasting as much as it is just having a bit of fun.

If he just has a grudge on the game and ''video games are for nerds'' type of approach, then he is totally 100% wrong.
