Some speculation about "The Terror Beneath"
Hey guys, I was talking with a few friends about the newest teaser, "The Terror Beneath", and we ended up on a rather interesting topic about how much the trailer seems to give away possible gameplay elements of the new champion's kit. Check out some key notes we took about the video and some speculation we came together about what may be added to our soon to be newest member of League of Legends:
The scene opens up in the open desert, a brief sandstorm breaks out, but the lookout upon his post is still maintaining vision of the area.
- This is a slightly more minor point that's not necessarily about the champion herself, but may hint at what situations she's best suited for. If the open desert is supposed to be similar to wide open spaces (lane/river on SR, for example), and the sandstorm and lookout are parallels to vision, then we can establish many things with the next few upcoming points.
The ground explodes. A sharklike fin appears and rushes to the caravan, and even as the lookout panics and gets the caravan driver to run as fast as possible, the fin still chases them down with ease and even jumps in front of them before striking.
- This is why I established the whole "open area, vision and wards" thing with the last point. The lookout and his warning is a very clear example of warding and responding to the chaos, but what's really interesting is that the monster in question still gets to the caravan.
At this point, I want to point out that our shark finned monster was not subtle. The ground exploded, the shark fin, the lookout noticed almost right away. These are not the signs of a stealthy ambush
, this was hunting and chasing down. After a bit of discussion, it seems to be to me and my friends that this is the champion that will hunt you down and is somewhat obvious that it is doing so. You can ward all you want, but if you're out in the open and likely all alone, this monster here will get you. Think
, but less 'bursty assassin with invisibility' and more 'I will run you down and you will still die'.
I also want to highlight the whole 'jumps in front of the prey before striking' thing. More on that later, but please, keep this in mind.
Chaos erupts. The camels are separated, the caravan driver runs off and is killed, and the lookout runs for the hills. Our monster picks off each of these now separated entities with great ease.
- While I personally have some serious doubts that this beast will have (for example) a crowd control ability that can separate players, this scene does once again highlight a certain similarity to a bug
we already know. Seriously, when she is hunting, you evidently do not want be alone and separated from the rest of your group/team.
The lookout climbs, and finds a destroyed temple. With a glimmer of hope across his face towards what could be salvation, the monster cuts him off. Leaping out in front of him, the lookout could be assumed to have never made it to the temple with...wait is that the Shuriman Sun Disk?
- A point about the Shuriman Sun Disk. What is the only other instance of the Shuriman Sun Disk we have in the game? Azir's turret passive, maybe? The point is much, much more evident when we note the destroyed ruins are not unlike a destroyed tower. We have quite a few interpretations about this within our group, but most of it boils down to this: Our new champion has the ability to cut you off from towers, or she has unique tower interaction outright. Think of it like this, both instances where she most notably 'engaged' on the caravan and crew has her leaping from the front of the target to cut off their escape. This may in fact be an integral part to her kit: Any gap closer she has may bring her in front of her target. Compared to most Assassins who tend to teleport behind their targets to get the jump on them, this seeming ability to cut off people's escape yet putting her in front of enemies and thus in the face of battle in many situations once again reinforces what I've stated earlier. She is not just another assassin, she is the monster that will hunt you down. This is our first interpretation of the whole turret metaphor; stray too far from a turret when she's hunting? Get ready to fight, because she will cut off your escape if you're too slow to reach your turret. The alternative interpretation of the turret is that our monster here has a unique turret diving mechanic, maybe having to do with how she dives below the ground. This I personally feel is less likely, as such an ability should probably not exist entirely to protect the balance of some of this game's unspoken rules (In this case, turrets=protection. Potent tower dive abilities could ignore this entirely), but really, there seems to be a rather explicit parallel to turrets in this scene. While I wouldn't enjoy it if it's not handled carefully, I won't be surprised if this new champ has a lot of turret diving potential.
tl;dr Our new champion seems to be right at home in open areas, hunting down individual targets that have strayed too far away from safety. She appears to have a whole lot of potent chasing potential, being able to cut off escapes and rushing right to the enemy even if she's seen ahead of time. There's the slight possibility that she may have potent turret dives.
We predict her kit would be that of an 'Assassin Type' Fighter. She's all about hunting down individual targets in open areas, being able to chase them down. Due to the large amount of "long term" mobility that the video suggests she has, we also suspect her damage to be DPS based, rather than burst based. After all the video does to repeatedly reinforce that she hunts you down individually as you try to run away, rather than just nuking down the entire caravan all at once, we highly suspect that while she has clear Assassin like elements in her kit, a lot of her power is going to be heavily grounded in that of a damage based fighter.
So, what do you think of the new champion. Any speculation of what she can or can't be? Any details from the video that we missed that can hint to what she's like? Any particular notes from your 'champion wish-list' that you want her to fulfill? Share your thoughts below.
