Runes are too expensives

Mechanizen··127 votes·4,021 views

Hi!

Am I the only guy who thinks runes are too expensives? :3 Because 1025 to 2050 IP for 1 quintessence is realy too much. The most stupid thing is marks / glyphs / seal . Most of them** cost 410 and 820 each ones**. It realy takes a lot of time to get the IP to compleat a page. When you are new on the game and when you want to buy new champs, you can't because to face you oppenend, you need runes...

Do someone think as me? :3

The cheaper they are, the less new players are pressured into buying Champions or IP Boosts with RP to afford them.

the less fun they have with the game, the less likely they are to stick with it, the less likely they'll get to the point where they want to buy skins, the less likely they are to try to push the game onto their friends many LoL players do not recommend the game to their friends because of the massive barriers of entry before when they could actually play with them, runes are probably the biggest barrier.

I agree with you that the Rune system is a terrible part of this game, but I'm not quite sure what point you were trying to make to me with your first paragraph.

You can say needing Runes may prevent having fun, but so does needing champions. Both are gated by IP or RP, but the progression factor of acquiring them can be half the fun. That is the strategy LoL uses to keep players for a longer amount of time (same strategy used in MMORPG's), while games like Dota 2 forego all progression and give people everything at once. They both work, but on different kinds of people; if you get bored quickly you'll quit if everything is handed to you (dota), and if progressive rewards are merely a nuisance you'll get fed up and leave before you even experience 3/4's of the game (LoL).

when have you ever heard someone say they were excited they unlocked a rune? or even a batch of runes? i personally felt incredibly disappointed and stopped playing the game for a several weeks when i dumped my IP on runes during a sale and saw how pathetic my haul was compared to how long it took me to save up that IP when have you ever heard someone say they were excited to unlock a new champion? on either end of the spectrum at 450 and 6300? i had a great time with amumu when i first unlocked him, and i also bought sejuani on an impulse to get her traditional skin and had a great time with her even though she was considered quite weak at the time.

runes are a chore, champions are a prize; you can't compare the work that goes into a champion's model, animations, voice and sound fx, and ability mechanics to +1.7% attack speed instead of +0.95 attack damage so why are their prices even in the same ballpark?

but the main issue i was trying to get across is that the bulk of rune costs for a player are paid within the first six months of them playing the game. they'll get enough runes for some general pages that are workable and let them compete in ranked and then STOP spending on runes because thinking outside the box when it comes to runes is too expensive for such a minor potential benefit. then they get to start actually enjoying IP because they can buy champions that they want. the current frequency map of joyful rewards to players looks something like this: -------------------------------------------o---o---o---o------o----------o---------o that initial long stretch is BRUTAL riot should instead remove rune costs and rebalance champion costs so players earn champs at the same overall average rate, but do not have to deal with rune bullshit, making the frequency map look more like this -------o--------o--------o-------------o------------o-----------------o------------o still 7 champions over the same period of time but the point where you start having fun comes way sooner.

Not Runes in particular, I'm just saying progression. Idk how many times I have to say it, the Rune system sucks and I don't want it. But a progression system works (getting IP for champions is 99% of LoL progression) to keep many people interested in a game, specifically when they value their investment of time.

SEKAI6 votes

I for one want them either completely removed, or at least heavily reduced in number, to like 1 - 2 slots per category.

It's much easier to balance the game that way and it's less on the burden of grinding too, win - win.

ChaoticPinecone1 votes

my problem with this is those 2-3 champions i have specific runepages for. like my mundo page with some CDR, some scaling MR, some scaling armor, some hybrid pen, and health regen. or my farm-lane support page with a couple GP5 seals and 1 gp5 quint.

I love seeing people try to learn a new language. It isn't easy! Since English is a language I am fluent in I would try to correct their mistakes in an attempt to help them learn it. Perhaps this person was simply doing that.

Daen5 votes

English in particular is ridiculously difficult to learn to fluency. There are so many esoteric rules and concepts that make no sense, it's amazing anyone can learn it. Here's my favorite example:

Effect (noun) - A result or consequence of an action. Affect (verb) - To have an effect. Effect (verb) - To bring about an effect.

You can do the following with these two words:

  • Affect an effect (change a result)
  • Effect an effect (bring about a result)
  • Affect an affect (change a change)
  • Effect an affect (bring about a change).

English sucks.

Scuttler Slayer1 votes

English is easy to learn.

Try French or Italian.

(Not bringing up languages with completely different alphabets 'cause that's obviously a different challenge.)

Daen3 votes

Many of the romance languages have rules that are generally consistent. English has almost as many exceptions as rules, possibly more. Many of us are biased since we're fluent, but learning a language like Spanish is significantly easier due to the rules of speech.

Scuttler Slayer1 votes

I would think my bias cancels out since I'm fluent in English and French.

You think French doesn't have exceptions? Lol.

Very few of my French friends (17-22 years old) can actually write French correctly. That's either indicative of how difficult of a language it is, or how bad schools are at teaching it. Frankly, I'd lean toward the former.

In French, you constantly have to think about grammar; even for the simplest of the sentences. In English, not as much.

Zaccea1 votes

From what I have been told French and English are more simple to learn if you're already fluent in one of them because they are so similar. Compare this to learning something drastically different such as Chinese or Korean. If it's difficult to learn an Asian language as a native English speaker, one would assume it is a two-way street.

Scuttler Slayer1 votes

I didn't learn one after the other, though. I learned them simultaneously.

Also, I don't see how they would be. French comes from latin and English is Greek.

Also, they're hardly similar. Syntax is the same, most of the time but not all of the time. Conjugating is completely different. Grammatical rules are completely different. There really aren't that many similarities.

The worst part about people who correct others' grammar on the internet is that they really think they're clever for it.

junglerboy161 votes

While it also irks me that people make grammar/spelling mistakes, everyone hates the guy who goes out of his way to point out the mistake and then doesn't even bother to share a real comment.

Also, I highly doubt the author realized there was a typo, and it is very obvious from his post that he is either a non-native english speaker (also, look, he is EUW) or was trying to type this on mobile, so give the man a break.

I could have made a similar post pointing out that he says "expensives" several times, but that is completely not the point of discussion here.

wait, is "completely not" something you can actually say?!? ... :D

junglerboy162 votes

indeed it is, it is a negation of a statement for the purpose of emphasis.

Riot is a business first and foremost, they need to make money. Runes beneficially help to envaluate IP boosts and RP pricing on champions.

BubbaDuke4 votes

The general consensus with the community is yea, runes are too expensive.

It's never going to change though. When I was gathering all my runes/pages, I ended up buying champions with RP when I really wanted a new one, which is exactly what Riot wants. Bastards.

The look on my face when I reached Level 30, then realized I needed to spend a fortune in IP to buy tier 3 runes. In the end, I just said "fuck it" and bought the tier 1 runes, which only cost 5 IP each.

Yes I recently started playing Katerina and building a new rune page is HARSH not only do I have to get the page but also the 2050 ip Quints along with all of the runes its rediculous!

And as soon as something is done about it, it will stop.

This game is prohibitively time-expensive for new players. That is a fact, and that is a problem. How do you get a friend to start playing when you start with "it'll take you a month just to get one champ you like and another month just to be able to use them properly"? ~Uiru

mjack333 votes

2 sets of penetration marks (no way to get around buying two sets of marks unless you don't play an entire half of the champ pool) 1 set of flat armor or flat health seals 1 set of flat or scaling Mr glyphs 1 set of attack speed or movement speed quints

= 2 rune pages that are good on all champs :)

:( Yeah runes are too expensive. But this is one of those things where they are a business and forcing you to save up ip for runes encourages you to spend rp on things that ... well that you can actually spend it on. It's the way to get you to spend Rp on things that you can also get with IP. And it's something they kind of have to do to stay in business.

OhOkYeah3 votes

Just buy t2 quints until you have a good pool of champs. This will save you thousands of IP that you can use on champs, or more t3 marks/glyphs/seals. T3 quints can come later.

T2 AD quints will give you 1.5 less AD than T3 AD quints, but you're spending 300 ip instead of over 3000. Not saying buy all the t2 quints, but buy what you need to get the job done.

But it is still way too expensive for people that don't play 16 hours a day. For normal people, it could literally take a year to get a few champs and a couple generic rune pages.

GaleWinUnleashed3 votes

Don't worry, it only took me 3 years and several thousand games to buy every champion and all of the runes that I want.

U can get 250 ish IP a day in ARAM with your FWOTD. thats 1750 IP a week for about 3.5 hrs of "work"

AMYS GRAVE4 votes

so for a full rune page it takes ~17.8k IP that's only 71 days of playing aram for 3.5 hrs a day to fill one rune page.

AMYS GRAVE2 votes

It is. Set a goal to fill 10 rune pages and i'll see you in 2 years. Hope you don't want to play any specific champions during that time.

Gentleman Gems2 votes

While i would like a small rune cost drop, it does not take too long to gather enough IP to buy a couple of runes. Plus, the grind is worth it in the end because people rarely use RP for IP boosts, their too worried about their fancy skins.

slippykitten1 votes

Maybe if you drew a pretty picture of a rune and put it under story and art, riot might actually respond.

410s aren't awful. 820s fucking suck though. That, and rune pricing is arbitrary as fuck

PalPlays1 votes

I honestly don't mind the price that much. Compared to what they were back in the day, these are like pennies.
