Question to people who know what goes on inside a monitor

How? How were you able to figure out and uderstand stuff like refresh rate, FPS, various graphic cards numbers and stuff like that there? I'm trying to do a research project but it just seems so overwhelming that there's so much concepts I do not know. How do I go about doing a project about something I have no idea about?
