The Toxicity Of Our Game

Dear Riot,

What will it take to get y'all to understand that this community doesn't really want new champs, skins, maps, or anything that "enhances" the gameplay at this point in time? What will it take for y'all to realize that what us players really want right now is a better community?

Unless you play with friends, acquaintances, or you're a really good player, almost e-sports good, then all you'll get is a bad time in LoL. From trolls, hackers, autolockers, and the almighty AFKers, it gets frustrating too often for any casual player to even win one match.

I can't say any of this w/o saying that some of us have been toxic players before, but most of us have learned. I've learned from my beginning days of LoL, yet plenty of people out there still don't care about teamwork or just casual fun. Having videos and promotional posters about teamwork are only going to be understood by those of us who already strive for teamwork (I.M.O. at least).

The Tribunal is useless since it only bans accounts and not the actual person playing, which is why I don't even participate in it anymore. People can always create another account, no matter which way you aim at banning them (LoL account, e-mail account, IP address, etc.). You can look at this article for more reference: http://www.examiner.com/article/league-of-legends-tribunal-punishment-rate-revealed

Unless you're already trying to figure out a better and more permanent way to ban true toxic players, then more power to you. But the fact still remains that champions, skins, and all that makes the game enticing won't make the game itself better. The fans, the people who make up the LoL community, ARE the game. It wouldn't be a game if there were no players. And sadly enough, I'd hate to see this game go at any time. What would be even worse would be that all the good, honest players leave and the game be filled with nothing but toxicity.

Riot, you've created something wonderful. But with all such wonderful things, it's going to have some cracks in the wall. I want to strive more towards sealing up more of these cracks (i.e. toxic players). I know this is easier said than done, but I believe it can be done. We the players need your cooperation and vice-versa.

I don't know what else to say at this point. But with all that has been said, I can say this: I can't vouch for the entire community, but more so myself and those who can sympathize with what I've been talking about. Something must be done about this toxicity fast and efficiently or this game will go under.

So from the bottom of my heart and many others, please help us out. We love LoL, you love LoL. There's no denying that. Let us both work together more efficiently towards fixing up these toxic players, especially those that refuse to learn!

Sincerely, One Desperate LoL Fan That Doesn't Want To Stop Playing

Thanks for your thoughts to Riot. If I may share my two cents, it sounds to me like you're frustrated. You want a better community and I believe Riot is doing their best. You are definitely free to voice your frustrations but I don't really see a suggestion from you of what needs to be done except that "Riot" isn't doing a good enough job and you want "more" help from Riot which is "eradicating" toxic players forever. I think that's impossible. There will always be new players that can become toxic or good players that get toxic. The best way is education and Riots doing that and for us to be involved personally but exemplifying good sportsmanship despite how we're treated. Riot doesn't control the community, what they can only control is the game. The problem of community starts with us. We know that banning is not the solution and that is why Riot seeks to reform their players. That alone is amazing. I've been playing LoL for a while and to me, the community has improved since.

Take a look at some of my thoughts here with Xael: http://community.na.leagueoflegends.com/c/behavior/9IVWxHhP-can-the-community-get-better-while-our-likelihood-of-meeting-the-same-player-again-is-low

I agree with you on the fact that there are way too many toxic, idiotic, and @$$H013 players out in the player base, but there really isn't anything else that can be done about this. As you've just stated, banned players can make new accounts, change IP addresses, even change computers if need be, and there is literally nothing that can be done to stop this. Riot has been trying to solve the issue of toxic players for quite some time. They've used the Honor Initiative, the Ribbon System, The Tribunal, and have even started what could be considered a "Propaganda Campaign" with the Teamwork OP series, and they've gotten substantial results. Unfortunately, as any social expert will tell you, we can't make a Utopia. It isn't realistic in any way, shape, or form for each of the multi-million players in League Of Legends to cooperate together all the time. Have you ever read a book called "The Giver"? It holds an example of a true Utopia, where everyone knows what to do, knows how to act, and does so accordingly. It's rather scary, and quite unrealistic to achieve. The only thing that can be done is to put out a few new systems to entice toxic players to change their ways, and move on. If need be, mute the toxicity. There is an option for that, and that's the reason why it's there. Maybe, some day, there will be an answer that solves everything. But not today.

Sincerely, An Optimist and Realist

Thank you all for your thoughts and feedback.

@Alfirinestel: I would love to give a suggestion as to what needs to be done, but honestly I really don't have any ideas myself. Like you said, it seems that education is the best way to go. I just read a thread here that talks about that: http://community.na.leagueoflegends.com/c/ideas/d2eRBct1-to-riot-from-a-n00b

@Feline: Like you said, a utopia is practically impossible to achieve for anything, especially a mmo game such as LoL, where anyone can say anything and not have to fear as much being that nobody really knows who's who. I just want there to be someway where people don't have to keep fearing the next match will be a disaster.

As for the champs, skins, etc., I was merely trying to make a point. I don't think it's bad thing nor do I really want them to halt production on any thing that really does enhance the gameplay. Simply just less of it so that other areas can be focused on. Like Feline said, Riot has done things to try and improve the community (i.e. Tribunal, Honor System). I don't think they totally don't care, but they're so busy with other stuff that they can't reply to everyone and get certain things people wanted fixed (i.e. Tribunal, a server, etc.).

I am a bit frustrated because I really don't play LoL as much as I used to or at the very most, not really practicing it tryhard style. I got other things in life I'm working on, so I can't be too dedicated. Honestly, and I'll say it again, I was once a toxic player myself. 2 years, I still hadn't learned to control my anger, plus I really didn't know what to do at times. But things are a bit different now, so...

So fill free to continue to discuss this amongst yourselves. :)

The problem is this...

The community you are saying wants better player interaction IS the community that is ruining player interaction. The problem is not with the system, though it could of course be improved I'm sure, it is with the people. People don't care about you, or anyone else but themselves. People do not fear reports.

If the community wants change, they need to stop complaining about the community and take it upon themselves to be better.
