Crit strike, a strong mechanic, but is it too much

As a game progresses I can see how crit strike becomes more and more powerful, but in reality when thinking about it, is critical strike just too much for the game. Thinking about it, I know that you have to have a decent amount of gold invested into crit strike for it to be effective but when you can kite down any champ without crit strike, why do they have it in the game. Because of crit strike every game boils down to which team can crit more, and as a result there are champions that have no build path other than "everything crit strike, plus something lifesteal". Sure champions can crit themselves to death on a thornmail, but is that really something that creates play and counter play or is it just there because it is.

I main adc and while I'm not high in the list of tiers, and I know that I still have things to learn about the game. That being said I love having crit strike on my adc's, but I just feel like it is wrong for the game when I build it. I have put in a poll for people to have, and while I don't want to see crit strike removed, because my main's depend on it, I don't feel that it is exactly healthy for the game to even have.

Crit strike exists as a damage multiplier to make Marksmen late game damage hoses This is exactly as intended. For auto attacks to be super effective you need to have three stats. Attack Speed, because it is a direct damage multiplier. Crit strike, because again, it is a direct damage multiplier. And Attack Damage, the stat that all those multipliers calculate off of. You also really want penetration and lifesteal.

Hence why most Marksmen are weak 1 item, mediocre 2 item, strong 3 item, and brutal 4+ item. They need a large mix of stats for their attacks to overtake the raw AP and AD ratios of assassins and mages. This also gives other roles a significant time period to press their advantage before the Marksmen get rolling. It is all about power curves. Crit is what gives Marksmen a power curve that rises all the way through the game.

With that out of the way, I don't understand your everything comes down to "which team can crit more" thing. The vast majority of teams will have one person investing in crit strike, with the potential for one or two more people to grab a small amount. Tanks obviously don't build crit, most bruisers get at most two damage items which tend to be BotRK, Trinity, or a pen item. Mages are building AP, AP Assassins are building AP. Supports of all roles won't be building crit. AD Assassins tend to buy Ghostblade, but they don't buy it for the crit, they buy it for the mix of CDR, Pen and active. So really, unless you think a single Trinity Force or a single Ghostblade is really really going for crit, I just don't see that being the case.

And then we get into the Trinity Force Marksmen who don't invest near as much into crit as the Infinity Edge Marksmen... Yeah, Crit clearly isn't over powered if only one role invests in it, and even then some people in that role don't use it heavily.

I don't think crit strike is overpowered, I just think it is too much. You have some very valid points in your post, but when I see a Yi or tryndamere, or even a gangplank, crit for 3/4 a person's life in a single hit, it makes me wonder why those champions even have abilities. Why bother using your q when you can just right click and call it a day. No, it isn't overpowered but in the same token it isn't what I would call healthy for the game either.

When I say "which team can crit more" I don't mean as an entire team, I mean just keep the person with crits alive to dish out more crits. Sure mages can burst down a champ, but that is a single champ, same goes for assassins, they can dump out a single champion, but a crit based champ, without using abilities can just stand there and blow the rest of the team up, so yea it kinda boils down to "he who crits more wins". Tanks, with their armor and sustain, still cant stand to a crit MF or crit Tristana. Thornmail is effective, but only to a point. As an adc main when I see an enemy thornmail, I just say, well now I gotta tell my mage to burst him down and I will finish the rest of their team.
