I swear, in my experience people there will downvote everything else when posting to boost their own thread. You occasionally see all threads drop one point down because someone thinks their work is that important.

Yeah, I've attempted to make threads before just for simple conversation or discussion, and not even 5 minutes after it's posted it gets downvoted 2 or 3 times with no comments added at all. Hard to really talk with people on the boards when any new thread gets downvoted immediately.
